Amazon Manufacturing Technical Specialist Principal Engineer, Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (AME) in Sunnyvale, California

Description

The ideal candidate, in addition to having a deep and broad understanding of materials science and engineering principles, will have had direct experience in most or all of the following:

  • materials characterization and testing methods

  • materials selection and materials-related considerations in product design

  • technical and business interactions with materials suppliers

  • device manufacturing and assembly operations, including at contract manufacturers

  • process development at lab and manufacturing scale

  • failure analysis and root-cause determination at all stages of product life cycle (development, processing/manufacturing, customer or field issues)

This candidate will have demonstrated steadily increasing levels of responsibility, through both technical accomplishments and past career growth. This history should show technical, innovative, and interpersonal skills and adaptability.

Key job responsibilities

In this role, you will

  • Work on complex problems where no current best practices exist, developing innovative solutions that resound across product categories.

  • Apply materials science/engineering principles and expertise to solve important materials-related issues, and create the internal mechanisms to reliably prevent recurrence (e.g., procedures, documentation, training, communications).

  • Engage with product teams during various stages of development, demonstrating a clear understanding and assessment of the customer impact for high-risk items, issues, and failures

  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders using technical analyses and business acumen to anticipate Operations’ strategic needs, creating news systems and processes as needed to provide successful decisions that impact the organization and the business.

  • Write precise, high-quality technical documents and executive summaries, communicating across organizational groups and management levels, explaining key issues, conclusions, and recommendations in a manner appropriate to each audience.

  • Travel as needed

About the team

The Manufacturing Technical Specialist (MTS) team is part of the Quality and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering organization in Operations. It consists of subject-matter experts who partner closely with other cross-functional technical experts and teams. These collaborations create state-of-the-art solutions within the Hardware and Product Design space. The MTS team focuses on process optimization and on introducing unique capabilities and/or materials to enable mass production deployment across all Amazon devices.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Sunnyvale, CA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • Masters in Materials Science/Engineering or closely related technical field (e.g., Chemical Engineering or Chemistry, with a materials-related focus)

  • A minimum of 15+ years of relevant work experience in a consumer electronics environment

  • 10+ years of professional experience in at least two of the following technical areas: materials characterization, polymeric materials, corrosion, injection molding, or adhesives

  • Previous hands-on experience using analytical instruments (e.g., DSC/thermal analysis, rheometry, FTIR, EDS, XPS, GC/MS, surface analysis) to diagnose issues and root-cause failures

  • Previous experience using statistical tools and methods such as statistical process control, Gauge R&R, Process Capability, and Design of Experiments

  • 5+ years of JMP or Minitab software, or equivalent, is required

  • Experience creating Intellectual Property rights including patents and trade secret documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Materials Science/Engineering with Mechanical Engineering expertise via undergraduate minor, experience, or separate degree.

  • 10 years of experience in a consumer electronics environment.

  • Authoritative knowledge of injection molding, environmental stress cracking, fatigue, and modeling.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $130,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $254,100/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
