The Department of Radiation Oncology in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University is conducting a national search for Director of the Medical Physics Division at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The new director will lead the physics faculty for clinical and academic mission, working in collaboration with the Department Chair on the strategy and operational functions of the program. The director will be responsible for leading the division and the faculty in, clinical practice, teaching, policy and procedure development, performance improvement, and high quality research.

The Radiation Oncology Physics Division is responsible for innovation, education, high-quality clinical support in all aspects of medical physics, including but not limited to treatment planning, nationwide and institutional quality assurance (QA) initiatives, regulatory (federal, state, radiation safety, etc.), accreditation processes, and improving technology in the main campus and affiliate sites of the expanding Radiation Oncology department. The department supports a wide variety of clinical and academic programs, including both CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics residency and ACGME-accredited Radiation Oncology Residency Programs, teaching and supervising graduate courses of Biomedical Engineering, and physics and cancer biology research as well as both investigator-initiated and cooperative group clinical trials. A wide variety of collaborations are available in Stony Brook University and Brook Haven National Laboratory. The department uses state-of-the-art technologies for external beam therapy, high-dose-rate brachytherapy, motion management, stereotactic radiosurgery and SBRT, advanced imaging, and translational application of artificial intelligence in the clinical practice. The director of the division will lead, support and enhance the academic efforts of the physics faculty, work to continually improve clinical care, and strive to make improvements in all aspects of the clinical and academic missions of the department. The director will supervise the Physics division and be expected to work towards building research excellence of the on-going and new projects and promote translation clinical trials by collaborating with the medical faculty.

Note: This position will provide site coverage at both SBUH and PFCC sites.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Medical Physics or related fields
• Eligible for recommendation to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
• 3-5 years of supervisory experience and 5 or more years of relevant clinical experience
• Recognizable track record of research with publication with expertise in Medical Physics
• Experience of education for residents and students
• Excellent communications, organizational, and strong leadership skills
• Current certification from the American Board of Radiology in therapeutic Medical Physics or Radiation Oncology
• Qualified for licensure by New York State

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Research and experience of applying artificial intelligence and machine learning in radiation oncology procedures
• Research funding such as R01; experience with externally funded research and ability to serve as principal or co-investigator
• Experience of human resources on various levels
• Evidence of conflict resolution and strong communication on difficult conversation
• Involvement in national and institutional service
• An overall track record of excellence in teaching, patient care, research (clinical or basic) and administration
