General Dynamics Land Systems Power Electronics Hardware Design Engineer in Sterling Heights, Michigan

The Advanced Capability Development Power Electronics Hardware Team is tasked with developing new hardware for the electrification of combat vehicles. The team is responsible for the design, build, control development of, and integration of new electrical power generation, conversion, distribution, and storage hardware. The team is also responsible for the operation of the High Voltage Conversion & Electrical Storage (HVC&ES) Research and Development Laboratory.

The team is looking for new members with an interest in power electronics (hardware, controls, firmware, software, etc.). New members will be exposed to multiple engineering disciplines related to vehicle electrification. Initially new members will support senior engineers with ongoing efforts, but will eventually lead new efforts.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Work within a small team to assist in the design, build, and testing of new vehicle electrical power hardware, from circuit board level design to power stage enclosure design
  • Support the integration and testing of high voltage vehicle power systems in the laboratory and on the vehicle
  • Assist in the development and realization of power electronics control theory
  • Support and lead the testing of newly developed power electronics hardware by developing test plans, test reports, etc.
  • Support the development, control, and the testing of vehicle power systems
  • Expand the capabilities of the HVC&ES Lab, to include: 1) Improving component testing 2) Evolving the Vehicle Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test-beds
  • Master development tools such as PSpice, Simulink, Embedded Coder, Mentor Graphics PADS Designer, various DSP/microcontroller IDEs using C/C++
  • Master tools such as CAN J1939/CANOpen, Python for GUI development, data acquisition hardware, Matlab
  • Participate in laboratory training

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Experience: 1-3 years
  • Experience with Power Electronics and Vehicle Electrification
  • Working in laboratory environment almost exclusively
  • Experience with Model & Simulation (e.g., Spice, MatLab, Simulink, CAN, etc.)
  • Experience with schematic capture software (Mentor Graphics PADS, Altium, etc.)
  • Ability to use engineering development & testing tools
  • Familiarity with military standards and test requirements
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a small team
  • Strong multi-tasking skills
  • Strong written & oral communication skills
  • Ability to occasionally travel

Interests:

  • Power electronics hardware
  • Power electronics controls development and software implementation (DSPs, FPGAs, etc.)
  • Electrical machines & drives
  • DC/DC converters
