Job Summary:

Web Informatics and Mapping (WIM) of the Upper Midwest Water Science Center (UMWSC), designs, develops, and hosts internet mapping applications and geospatial tools. Although predominantly federal, WIM’s customers and cooperators also include state and international government organizations. Having a positive and effective World Wide Web presence both internally and publicly is essential to our operation. Success in this endeavor will require designing, developing, and maintaining websites that will communicate all the relevant aspects of WIM to all viewers. Coding must be well formed, efficient, and documented. Although the use of innovative web coding techniques is encouraged, sites must be designed and coded in a way that allows for continuity and consistency by other individuals/developers involved with WIM to make edits and design changes. Adherence to U.S. government policies and standards for website design and development must also be followed.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities:

Akima Systems Engineering is looking for a Web Designer to perform website design, development, and maintenance and supporting application development through the following:

  • Design visually appealing websites that effectively communicate the message of the WIM program with logical navigation. The design must include required design and navigation components as specified by the USGS website design standards, USGS visual identity, U.S. government accessibility standards, and others.

  • HTML Coding must consist of standardized development platforms, must be logically structured and be well documented. The use of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) or similar is desired. Development must account for the display of all major/mainstream web browsers to include Internet Explorer, Chrome, FireFox, Safari, and any other browser. Pages must be written such that a similarly competent individual can open the page and in a reasonable amount of time be able to understand the code and make edits or design changes.

  • All webpages and sites require a certain amount of constant maintenance. The performance of sites and pages must be monitored on a regular basis to ensure compliance with expected standards. Design, content, and coding must also be reviewed to ensure a consistent and accurate message of WIM is being presented.

  • Design and create standardized and custom mapping applications. The use of tools such as ESRI’s Story Maps, ESRI’s web mapping portal shall be used to design and create applications. In addition, customized coding using WIM standardized templates shall also be utilized to meet customer’s needs.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelors degree and 0-2 years of experience.

  • Effectively compile and organize, store, and archive information.

  • Familiar with HTML, cascading style sheets (CSS).

  • Knowledge in Python Scripting VBScript, Javascript, advance styling frameworks, Drupal, databases, and database interfaces.
