The Ornamental Specialist position is part of the Trees & Ornamental work unit of the Minnesota State Capitol Complex Groundcrew. This position largely exists to maintain ornamental garden beds on the state capitol grounds, memorials, and surrounding agency buildings. The work includes planting, transplanting, weed pulling, mulching, deadheading, watering, trimming perennials, etc. Snow removal in the winter is also required, ranging from hand shoveling, snow blowing, operating utility plows to clear and de-ice sidewalks, and operating truck plows in parking areas. Other duties assigned include general grounds maintenance such as picking litter and emptying trash receptacles, filling potholes, and making minor repairs to parking signage. Position also backs up Turf & Irrigation unit, involving mowing, trimming, sodding, edging, seeding, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of techniques and practices in plant care such as gardening, groundskeeping, nursery work, natural resource management, etc.

  • Ability to complete snow removal operations with hand shovel, snow blower, etc.

  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

  • Ability to learn on the job, and adapt to changes to schedule, work environment.

  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions year-round.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in tree and shrub care, planting, trimming, pruning, and felling

  • Experience in turf care mowing and trimming

  • Experience working in a public setting such as parks and recreation facilities

  • Experience plowing snow

  • Customer service skills

  • MN Non-commercial Pesticide Applicator license

  • Commercial Class ‘B’ driver’s license

Physical Requirements

Successful candidate must pass pre-employment physical. Physical Demands: Work Performance Testing (WPT). Job involves exerting up to 36-50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 22-30 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 11-15 pounds of force constantly to move or lift objects.
