The City of Saint Charles Public Works Department is currently recruiting for the position of Facility Maintenance Mechanic. The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled and skilled work to maintain the electrical, plumbing and other general construction or repair work of a City-owned facilities and properties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Perform carpentry and masonry work on the interiors and exteriors of city facilities.

  • Repairs and replaces plumbing fixtures.

  • Maintains and repairs lighting fixtures.

  • Perform painting services on interior and exterior of facilities.

  • Relocates and installs new or existing computer lines and phone lines, moves or installs new outlets and

  • Relocates and assembles office furniture.

  • Operate and service motors, fans, pumps, heat exchangers and other related mechanical equipment.

  • Generate and track work orders via CMMS.

  • Escort, supervise, and serve as onsite point of contact for contractors, as needed.

  • Perform snow removal and de-icing services.

  • Maintain a wide variety of HVAC equipment/systems.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours facilities requests.

    Additional Tasks and Responsibilities

    While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

  • May serve on various committees.

  • Performs related duties as needed.

    Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Vocational/Trade School, preferably in HVAC.

  • Three (3) years specialized training in general construction, rehabilitation or building maintenance and construction projects, including both major and minor alterations.

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.

  • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.

  • Ability to exert mildly heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 150 pounds.

  • Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.

    Environmental Adaptability

  • Ability to work under moderately safe and comfortable conditions where exposure to construction site environmental factors such as temperature variations and extremes, odors, toxic agents, noise, machinery, traffic hazards, wetness and/or dust, may cause some discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.
