The St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department's Intern program is designed to provide the intern with firsthand knowledge, experience and understanding of public parks and recreation agencies. Students will be provided the opportunity to integrate and apply knowledge, theory and understanding from the academic setting to the working environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Interns will learn and assist in all job functions the St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department provide and will work with a variety of supervisory staff during their internship. Specific areas the internship will focus on are:

  • Recreation as it relates to planning and starting new programs, supervising current programs, evaluating past programs and learning computer software programs. Direct leadership skills will be emphasized as students conduct programs and special events. Internship will also include acquiring knowledge and working in aquatics, youth and adult sports, day camp and concessions.

  • Park Maintenance that includes staff scheduling, supervision, ball fields, ongoing facility upkeep and new construction. Park Maintenance also oversees the City Cemetery operations.

  • Park Administration , which includes budgeting, finance, policy formation, and public & professional meetings. A customer-employee relation as intern becomes involved with patrons and guests working with Administration Staff.

  • Park Ranger functions that include programs, patrolling and general law enforcement duties.

    Qualification

  • College Level Junior or Senior Parks and Recreation students pursuing degree in a related field recommended for an internship by the student's university.
