The Automation organization is a growing organization at Tyson Foods that is responsible for the development and validation of innovative robotics and automation technologies and solutions that improve team member safety, optimize labor and yield, ensure food safety, and provide a framework for sustainable profitability.

As a Senior Automation and Robotics engineer, you will study Tyson operations and work with process experts to come up with innovative robotics and automation solutions that can be standardized and scaled within Tyson. This can involve sourcing solutions from established vendors, co-developing solutions with our strategic vendors, collaborating with startup companies, and/or doing R&D work to create solutions that are unique to Tyson needs. This role / team will identify opportunities, develop proof of concept solutions and present to executive leadership. These opportunities will be founded in data from our systems of record and this team will be solving problems that best meet the needs of our business and are in high demand. Upon approval, this position would then take a driving position implement these solutions into production facilities. It will require a strong partnership with the existing engineering groups, production plant leadership, maintenance teams, IT organization and executive leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Visit plant locations, learn, and understand the production processes; identify and document automation opportunities. Any automated solution will have to be well integrated into the production process and any anomalies will need to be clearly identified/communicated.
  • Assess the financial and efficiency impacts of these opportunities and design solutions in collaboration with key stakeholders in operations and technology teams and develop cost-benefit analysis procedure.
  • Create proof of concept solutions that can be demonstrated and tested to drive efficiency, worker safety and financial returns leveraging technologies such as Robotics, computer vision, and other industrial automation and software technologies.
  • Lead vendor solutioning evaluation, working closely with large scale vendors to ensure Tyson Foods is getting a highly scalable and rapidly available solution.
  • Work with Mechanical, Electrical, and Software engineers to develop the details of the automation solution that you are creating. The goal is for these solutions to become part of the Tyson automation product line that can be scaled and deployed across the Tyson enterprise.
  • Design, validate, and execute appropriate test methods to address system design and performance issues.
  • Facilitate complex problem-solving skills, enhance collaboration across functional groups, and support development efforts for current manufacturing hardware and new system development.
  • The position entails rigorous process discipline and documentation practices as well as excellent cross-functional communication skills to assure functionality, safety, reliability, and quality of the product.
  • Partner with industry leading technology companies and emerging technology startups to source and apply the new technologies.
  • Develop robotics, computer vision or motion control software related to custom automation solution development.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, or equivalent degree or education.
  • 3 to 5 years of direct related experience in application of robotics and automation in manufacturing / production environments OR 3 to 5 years of direct experience in engineering and development of robo ics and automation solutions
  • Proficiency and experience in industrial robotics and their application, communication protocols, and programming experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, demonstrated technical writing skills, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Should demonstrate a strong interest in cross-functional project work.
  • This role would be responsible for delivering multiple projects concurrently so strong project and time management skills are a must.
  • Special Skills: Strong history of data analytics and trend analysis, good documentation skills, systems thinking approach.
  • Travel: 25% travel required.
