Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES SE-PARAPROFESSIONALS (Substitutes) - 2024-2025 in Spencerport, New York

A direct care position involving supervision and observation of students enrolled in the class. The Paraprofessional acts independently and as a team member in directing, counseling and instructing children in planned/unplanned instructional and recreational activities and daily living routines.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

  • Performs those crisis intervention functions as outlined by the intensive management program supervisor.

  • Implements classroom and behavioral goals as determined by the multidisciplinary instructional team.

  • Assists with the implementation of appropriate coping and resolution skills for students.

  • Assists the teacher in small group instruction including planning, evaluating and providing direct instruction under the supervision of the teacher.

  • Assists the teacher in preparing instructional materials for classroom teaching and implements certain units as directed by the teacher.

  • Collaborates with the teacher in providing progress notes and incident reports as needed.

  • Plans and implements extracurricular activities including play productions, seasonal events, etc.

  • Provides supervision to student groups during transition times, lunch periods and throughout the day.

  • Attends all in-service and regular classroom-based staffings as directed by the teacher.

  • Maintains contact with outside agencies if/when students are involved in jobs, vocational training, etc. as directed by the instructional team.

  • Maintains an awareness of current treatment plans of students assigned and is perceptive of the impact that relationships and activities have on the treatment plan objectives by communicating these observations to the instructional team.

  • Candidates will need to undergo rigorous three-day training in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention and yearly re-certification refreshers in the above.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND APTITUDES:

Candidates must be flexible, patient, physically/emotionally able to handle confrontational situations with students without personalizing these events. The candidates will also need to be resilient to dealing with sudden, explosive crises that may cause deviations from work plans and schedules.

Job Qualifications

Must possess or meet requirements for Civil Service title of Student Behavioral Assistant, Teacher Aide, or School Aide.

Student Behavioral Assistant

Two (2) years of full-time paid or the part-time equivalent experience involving the supervision, counseling or instruction of children in a school facility, institution or agency devoted to the care, education, rehabilitation or detention of children; OR Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate's degree or completion of 60 credit hours;

Teacher Aide

One (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working in a clerical capacity; OR One (1) year of full-time or its part-time equivalent paid or volunteer equivalent experience working with children; OR, Possession of a certificate of completion for a course for Child Care through an occupational school, The American Red Cross or similar agency;

School Aide

No education or experience qualifications.
