The Road Home Housing Advocate - Pamela Atkinson's Resource Center in South Salt Lake, Utah

Who We Are

The Road Home was founded in 1923 and has been a leader in the endeavor to end homelessness for over 100 years. We provide low-barrier emergency shelters, supportive services, and housing-first-minded rental assistance that helps individuals and families step out of homelessness and back into the community. We are seeking compassionate and empathetic individuals who are interested in making a difference in the lives of others and their community.

The Road Home seeks employees that have a deep commitment to the mission of serving adults and families that are experiencing homelessness. Housing Advocates will provide excellent customer service to these individuals, while working for the state’s largest homeless shelter system.

The Housing Advocate will perform a wide variety of duties relating to working with poverty and vulnerable populations. This team member will work in a homeless shelter system that provides emergency shelter to over 1,000 individuals nightly, and permanent supportive housing to over 1,700 individuals each day. Job Duties

  • Provide quality customer service to our clients, who may be in need of resources in addition to a warm bed for the night.

  • Observe, and help regulate activities at the shelter, ensuring rules and procedures are followed.

  • Provide clear and specific information to residents, and instruct residents of shelter rules/procedures.

  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe facility, identifying special needs and referring needs to supervisor.

  • Assist in resolving conflicts which may arise among residents.

  • Write incident reports where appropriate, maintain records of resident stays, and maintain accurate shelter log.

  • Answer phones, take messages and respond to the public.

  • Provide occasional crisis intervention, and emergency interface with community resources such as EMS and law enforcement.

  • Operate as part of a team that strives to serve the homeless in our community.

  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively and handle difficult situations with professionalism and empathy.

  • Ability to multitask and remain calm in demanding and unpredictable situations.

  • Good computer skills.

  • Ability to make sound decisions.

  • Exceptional boundary-setting skills and the ability to set and maintain appropriate boundaries with guests.

  • Ability to be culturally responsive and able to work with clients who are from different racial, socio-economic, and ethnic communities with respect and openness.

  • Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
