Job Overview:

RWJBarnabas Health is looking to add a qualified Per Diem Respiratory Therapist in Somerville, NJ. This position provides for the treatment, disease management, control, and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiac and pulmonary system.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Valid NJ State Respiratory Care Practitioner License

  • RRT certification by National Board for Respiratory Care

  • BLS certification and ACLS certification

  • NRP certification required within 60 days of hire

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Day Shift

  • Per Diem Schedule

Essential Functions:

  • Administers respiratory care as ordered by the physician and documents required information in patient records

  • Performs arterial puncture analysis and reporting of sample results, interprets results relative to acid base balance and Ventilatory status

  • Performs daily preventative maintenance and quality control for blood gas analyzers and co-oximeter

  • Sets up, operates, monitors and troubleshoots oxygen delivery devices, pulse oximeters, end tidal co2 monitors and ventilators

  • Performs and interpret weaning parameters and simple spirometry (bedside) as ordered

  • Responds to Codes, and RRT and performs CPR as required

  • Intubates (if certified) and manually ventilates patients during and emergency situations

  • Provides and maintains patient airway (including suctioning and securing endotracheal tubes, tracheostomies and oral pharyngeal airways)

  • Extubates patient as ordered by physician

  • Assists during bronchoscopy procedures

  • Reports pertinent information to oncoming personnel

  • Provides appropriate in-service to patients, family, physicians, nurses and clinical employee as required

  • Maintains the department in orderly and clean condition

  • Verifies that physician orders are complete and appropriate and checks for possible contraindications

  • Medical gas therapy per physician orders or approved protocols. Perform rounds on all assigned patients to deliver appropriate care.

  • Assess and interpret patient status using Laboratory and Radiology results along with vital signs and other assessments to identify and provide appropriate care

  • Based on the specific needs identified; Evaluate therapy orders for completeness, appropriateness, quality and effectiveness using Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines.

  • Recommend changes in the care plan based on assessments and guidelines.

  • Correctly complete all patient records and documentation according to Department policy including patient assessment, plan of care, E-MAR, patient education and performance improvement fields.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the use of Oxygen Therapy, BiPAP, CPAP and High Flow Nasal Cannulas (HFNC) for use in primary assignment area patient populations.

  • Knowledge and skill include device and interface selection, application, operational verification and modes of therapy.

  • Assess effectiveness of therapy and report any adverse reaction or side effects such as skin irritation.

  • Demonstrate Knowledge and skill in the use of invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation in primary assignment area patient populations.

  • Knowledge and skill include device and interface selection, application, operational verification, troubleshooting, and modes of therapy. Assess effectiveness of therapy three times per shift.

  • Report any adverse reactions or side effects such as skin irritation.

  • Comply with all Department, Infection Prevention, and Safety policies and procedures. Demonstrate knowledge of National Patient Safety Goals and relevant Standards from Joint Commission, Department of Health, CMS and other regulatory bodies

  • Determine priorities and organizes work and time to meet them. Demonstrate

  • The ability to function in a diverse workforce. Interact tactfully, constructively and diplomatically with others.

  • Perform emergency airway care procedures and maintain patient ventilation during emergent situations. As ordered and if certified, establish, maintain and obtain samples from arterial lines. Perform arterial punctures to obtain arterial samples. Analyze arterial, capillary, and venous blood samples.

  • Complete all mandatory Competencies within specified timeframe. Complete all Net Learning online training within specified timeframe.

  • Attend external and internal educational programs as part of continuing education.

  • Assures appropriateness for continuation of discontinuation of therapy.

  • Consistently meets the attendance guidelines according to RWJBH Policy.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned
