KBR’s Science and Space division is seeking a Geospatial/Cloud Support Scientist to support our Technical Support Services Contract (TSSC) at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earth Resources Observation & Science (EROS) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/) near Sioux Falls, SD (http://www.siouxfalls.org).

The successful candidate will become an integral part of TSSC support for the Integrated Science and Applications Branch (ISAB) USGS EROS Center. The TSSC Team is comprised of highly talented remote sensing scientists, land cover scientists, software engineers, web developers, and systems engineers who work together to support the dynamic science and technical requirements of our USGS Customer. This includes a wide-ranging portfolio of projects with focuses in land cover and land change monitoring, remote sensing time-series algorithm development, land cover forecasting, land change assessments, fire science, drought monitoring, ecosystem & vegetation dynamics, and others. This position will work with both the Data Processing and Archive System (DPAS) project and the land cover initiatives (e.g. LCMAP, NLCD, etc.) and will be responsible in assisting and providing outreach to EROS product users on cloud access and completing analysis of USGS Landsat, land cover, and related geospatial data. This role will support an examination of Landsat and EROS data products and develop tutorials and tools to enable analysis on how and where respective products are complementary and can be used in conjunction to describe U.S. landscape characteristics. Outreach includes creating instructional documentation, videos, and analysis workflows; creating use-case example applications and website materials; and hosting webinars and trainings on cloud access and geospatial data processing within Amazon Web Services (AWS). This role will also function as the primary technical support when end users contact User Services for aid or troubleshooting related to cloud access and associated tools.The Geospatial/Cloud Support Scientist must have the ability to work both autonomously and in a team environment with other contractor staff, the Government customer, and end users. The position requires strong written and verbal communication skills. The individual must have the ability to take initiative, to develop creative solutions, and to have a willingness to learn. The position also requires strong AWS cloud data access and processing skills to guide and mentor end users. Knowledge of moderate resolution satellite data (Landsat, MODIS, etc.) and geospatial data products (NLCD, LANDFIRE, MTBS) is a plus

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create outreach materials to aid users in moving to and working in the AWS cloud space. These materials will include instructional documentation and web-based e-learning materials; working with an in-house videographer to produce video content; as well as creating and conducting virtual and in-person webinars and trainings.

  • Develop demonstration workflows and tutorials on accessing Landsat imagery and/or geospatial data in the cloud, and processing data in the cloud for science applications

  • Serve as the point of contact for assisting Landsat and geospatial landscape data users in answering questions and troubleshooting issues that relate to working with data in the cloud and/or accessing/analyzing data via scripts.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    Candidates must meet the requirements listed below to be considered for this position; please note required items on your resume.

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain credentials for facility access and user accounts.

  • Must have a 3-year residency in the United States

  • Education: Minimum of Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred) in Earth Science, Natural Science, Physical Science, or Computer Science related with emphasis in geography, landscape ecology, forestry, land use/land cover science, hydrology, remote sensing (time-series monitoring, land cover classification, vegetation monitoring), with course work in statistics, remote sensing, GIS

  • Years of Experience: At least 3+ years of directly related professional experience (willing to consider differing combinations of education/experience)

  • Proficient in geospatial data analysis and interpretation

  • Experience working with GIS software applications (such as ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, ERDAS)

  • Fundamental understanding of remote sensing science and the characteristics of geospatial data, such as: Landsat, LCMAP, NLCD, LANDFIRE, MODIS, hyperspectral data, aerial imagery, etc.

  • Demonstratable proficiency with Python and/or R

  • Experience working with Application Programing Interfaces (APIs). (Examples: M2M API, the AppEEARS API, Earthdata CMR)

  • Experience working with cloud technologies (Amazon Web Services, AZURE, Google Earth Engine)

  • Experience with Git, GitHub, BitBucket

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including effective questioning, listening, and presentation skills

    PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Familiarity with issue tracking / ticketing systems such as Jira and Kayako.

  • Experience conducting spatial analysis to address research questions

  • Knowledge of statistical-based data analysis and validation techniques

  • Experience with metadata standards (I.e. STAC )

  • Demonstratable proficiency with GDAL

  • Strong writing ability and experience authoring process documentation, metadata, reports, and research papers (peer reviewed publications)

Experience and/or Education in lieu of these qualifications will be reviewed for applicability to meet these requirements

WORK LOCATION

This position supports a team anchored in Sioux Falls, SD and is offered as onsite, hybrid remote/onsite or a fully remote work environment. Travel may be required to support conference participation.
