Purpose:

Reporting to the Director, Market Analysis, the incumbent will be responsible for supporting Singapore Trading desks by providing short and long term fundamental analysis. The analyst will work effectively within the Singapore analysis group but also contribute regularly to the assignments led by trading strategists and senior analysts in other locations such as Houston and London. The Market Analyst will proactively engage with traders and trade managers to understand current and potential positions and tailor analysis accordingly. He or she is responsible for working closely with the trading strategists in other locations to drive fundamental analysis for the global team.

Primary Function/Responsibilities:

  • Analyze fundamental cross barrel oil data; update monthly supply and demand balances for Asia and the Middle East. Track refinery maintenance, expansions, trade flows, and fuel specification changes.

  • Model demand based on seasonal patterns like weather, festivities and economic climate.

  • Model supply based on changes in refinery and non-refinery production output. Track intelligence on refinery maintenance, expansions, and closures on a regular basis.

  • Tracks ships to keep the relevant desks updated on regional trade flows.

  • Participate in weekly meetings with traders, collaborate and formulate the short-term market view and try to generate trading ideas.

  • Maintain, improve and develop new models to support changing business needs.

  • Provide daily market updates of news and analysis pertinent to the product markets worldwide. This would include market intelligence from a range of publications, news sources and original work.

  • Provide ad hoc analysis and help with data augmentation exercises carried by the Singapore analysis team.

  • Contribute to both regular and ad hoc requests from Corporate and Commercial management presentations.

Required Qualifications, Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, finance or economics.

  • 3-6 years’ relevant experience on a trading floor, with trading support, or in a refinery in a market/planning function preferred. Exposure to heavy fuels trading is a plus.

  • Financial, economic, statistical analysis or modeling experience in fundamental research firms and energy consultancies is preferred.

  • Strong written, oral communication and presentation skills.

  • Proficiency with Excel, Access or other database software, statistical modeling software, and economic model development is a plus (R, Matlab, Eviews, Stata,etc).

  • Coding experience in SQL and VBA or other programing language preferred.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft software applications.
