Educational Interpreter

Position Description: 

This position performs sign-language interpreting for deaf students and voice for the student when/if needed to facilitate communication and education of the deaf and hard of hearing students in the District.  This position performs non-instructional signing activities, converting voice to sign language and/or vice versa.  This position provides specially designed instruction to student(s) as supervised by the Special Education teacher. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Copy of high school diploma or equivalent -- documentation required at time of application.  Completion of two year Interpreter Training Program, including courses in Education Code of Ethics.  Must have passed an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) prior to being hired.

Official transcript with evidence of AA degree or higher or 48 semester or 72 quarter college-level credit hours or copy of ParaPro Assessment with score of 461 or higher -- documentation required at time of application.

Demonstrated ability to:

perform accurate, timely, impartial and effective signing, including receptive skills to understand a deaf and hard of hearing student who signs rapidly

work independently

obtain, clarify and exchange information

ability of lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds

interact with deaf and hard of hearing children in a warm and confident manner

remain flexible to adapt to changes in environment and/or schedules
