  • Determines project scope and specifications with substantial latitude for action or decision.

  • Recommends changes in procedures, design or equipment where necessary.

  • Initiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services.

  • Communicates with clients to provide technical assistance in reference to complex product evaluation and/or inspection and follow-up services.

  • Follows up on contacts from clients.

  • Resolves technical issues and explains UL procedures and requirements.

  • Plans, conducts and supervises projects of major magnitude and scope.

  • Determines areas in which the product is not in compliance with UL requirements or of any changes in project scope or specifications and notifies client.

  • Coordinates complex laboratory activities by developing data sheets.

  • Coordinates administrative aspects of project management.

  • May serve as Project Handler of record and may sign as Reviewer of record as assigned.

  • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.

  • Resolves complex engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of the variations.

  • Develops UL requirements for testing products beyond the scope of existing standards, or those involving unique features requiring frequent use of independent judgment.

  • Develops special test methods and test equipment.

  • Represents UL on technical committees of national and/or international organizations.

  • Provides leadership and technical advice on special projects that involve complex, new or unusual issues.

  • May provide direction as a Primary Designated Engineer or Designated Engineer for specific product categories.

  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.

  • Performs special projects as directed.

  • Reviews testing protocols in assigned industry for technical accuracy, consistent and high quality.

  • Develops strategic written communications for clients and internal stakeholders of trending regulatory and industry developments to ensure internal preparation and client compliance.

  • Supports Technical Services leadership in defining the interpretation, application and uniformity of technical methods, techniques and requirements applied in testing, audits and/or inspections.

  • Responsible for the implementation of technical interpretation, application, training and uniformity of technical methods, techniques, and requirements in assigned geography and/or Industry. Develops guidelines, procedures and programs for internal operational adherence.

  • Partner with Quality and Operations functions to drive laboratory/field consistency. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures required to achieve and maintain necessary accreditations and certifications with accreditation bodies and notification authorities.

  • Supports strategic selling opportunities by leveraging industry relationships and providing technical expertise and advice during the sales process.

  • Represents UL at meetings of outside organizations; providing expert advice to influence industry approaches and elevate UL’s thought leadership in the market.

  • Conducts webinars, presentations, technical trainings and workshops in region (and potentially globally) for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Leads special projects related to laboratory/field alignment, continuous improvement, as well as process and service innovation.

  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct, and follow all physical and digital security practices

  • Performs other duties as directed.

  • Some University education in an electrical or electronics related discipline plus directly related work experience.

  • Preferred: University Degree (equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree) in Engineering or related field from an accredited program in related field, plus at least 8 years of directly related work experience.

  • Strong technical understanding of the applicable industry regulations, standards, services/product lines and target markets; demonstrated history of strong technical judgment.

  • Deep knowledge and experience of testing and operational procedures related to applicable regulations and industry standards

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data, to interact with all levels of the organization, and to present and facilitate discussions of the findings. Ability to present complex and highly technical information in a straightforward manner

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, complex, and technical projects

  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions to resolve problems

  • Ability to coach and mentor team members to function as one team and develop individually.

  • Self-starter with the ability to work autonomously, on a team, and within a global matrix environment

  • Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills, as well as the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders
