Summary: Responsible for the assessment and basic management of medical, trauma and environmental emergencies under the supervision of on or off-line medical control. Assists with patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of the ED Registered Nurse.

  1. Recognizes and reports appropriate data to the registered nurse.

  2. Assists registered nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations, and treatment.

  3. Provides general nursing care – positioning, lifting, turning, and assisting with ambulation.

  4. Performs other duties as in-service, including crutch walking, dressing changes, and assisting physician with splint or cast application, application of ace bandages and strapping devices.

  5. Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.

  6. Assists patients from vehicle into wheelchair or onto gurney, as need dictates.

  7. Takes and records temperature, pulse, BP and I&O

  8. Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs immediately and within established standards.

  9. Maintains and prepares rooms between patients and procedures.

  10. Properly assists with preparation of equipment for procedures.

    1. Obtains IV supplies for registered nurse or physician as requested.
  11. Monitors stock and restocks supplies as needed in the Emergency Department.

  12. Transports patients and supplies to diagnostic departments, nursing units.

  13. Prepares patients for meals and assists as necessary.

  14. Participates in continuing education and departmental in-service meetings.

  15. Maintains policies and procedures established by the department.

  16. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-services meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for ongoing education.

  17. Documents in record, procedures performed, and care given.

  18. Obtains patient specimens.

  19. Performs phlebotomy and EKGs.

  20. Performs Quality Control (QC) on spec meter.

  21. Cleans supplies and instruments per procedure guidelines.

  22. Assists in cost containment through the appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.

  23. Operates equipment safely and correctly.

  24. Maintains a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, hospital staffs.

  25. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

**Requirements:** **• High school graduate or equivalent.**

  • 1 year of experience as EMT or CNA/PCT or Medical Assistant

HIGHLY DESIRABLE:

• Current BLS Certification.

• Current EMT- Basic or Paramedic Licenses.

• Medical terminology.
