Bellefaire JCB Social Advocates for Youth (SAY) Counselor in Shaker Heights, Ohio

Bellefaire JCB is among the nation’s largest, most experienced child service agencies providing a variety of mental health, substance abuse, education, and prevention services. Bellefaire JCB helps more than 43,000 youth and their families yearly achieve resiliency, dignity and self-sufficiency through its more than 25 programs.

Position Summary:

We are looking for a full time  (10 or 12 month)  SAY Counselor to provide prevention and early intervention services to secondary school students in designated SAY School Districts. SAY Counselors are located in the schools. SAY services are designed to help prevent and reduce the use of alcohol and other drugs and decrease the incidence of other social and mental health problems such as teen violence, teen depression and suicide.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborate with school principals, teachers, counselors and other school personnel about social, behavioral, emotional and environmental issues that impact on students’ success.

  • Accept referrals of students who have been abusing alcohol or drugs or who have problems with peers, parents, or school: provide assessment and time limited individual, family or group counseling sessions; or refer to appropriate treatment program or practitioner.

  • Contact and meet with parents of students who are referred for service to obtain consent to treat.

  • Build a program of peer education to include active listening skills, effective message sending, self-awareness, decision-making, communication strategies and conflict resolution.

  • Conduct a program of parent education to include effective parenting groups; as well as serve as a resource to school wide programs on topics of concern and interest to parents.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Master’s Degree in Social Work or related field

  • Licensure: Valid Ohio LSW or LPC required

  • Skills: Knowledge of prevention; risk and protective factors and evidenced based practices. Strong clinical skills including expertise in family dynamics, crisis intervention, family education, behavioral interventions, and substance abuse therapy. Sensitivity in relating to persons of varying backgrounds and demonstrate ability to work with diverse groups of people possessing various strengths, aptitudes and abilities.
