The Seattle Times Sr. Software Engineer in Seattle, Washington

The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization, is looking for a Senior Software Engineer (full stack with a front-end focus) to join our Software Engineering team. This full-stack engineer is responsible for a variety of tasks ranging from daily support for content production and publishing to integrating third-party systems into our news products. This individual is responsible for coordinating integration, design, and development with other software engineers while enhancing the process for testing and deployment. The Senior Software Engineer needs a broad technical background, exceptional technical skills, and extensive experience in integrating, developing and managing large systems.   

  

The stakeholders are product and business managers. The successful Senior Software Engineer will be results-driven, passionate about delivering quality innovation, and motivated to mentor and contribute to standards.  

  

Responsibilities:  

  • Work independently in leading efforts to build new applications while maintaining, and improving, the systems we already have.

  • Support Seattle Times technology platforms such as www.seattletimes.com , internal newsroom tools, reader-facing mobile applications, and various APIs.   

  • Write code, test, and solve problems to achieve business objectives.  

  • Reach to encompass and aid in defining Best Practices for dealing with the team’s responsibilities in supporting the technology and system requirements.   

  • Work as part of cross-functional business and product teams.  

  • Become a team resource for functionality solutions, SDLC improvements and requirement interpretation along with coding and internal documentation standards.  

  • Address the technical team’s stewardship over technology, systems, and practices by contributing your experience to appropriate plans for monitoring, infrastructure, and incident response.  

  • Proactively maintain knowledge of market and technology trends and lead in discussions of how they may relate to team responsibilities.  

  • The work occasionally requires weekend, odd hour, and emergency efforts to support continuous operation.  

  • Be able to work remotely full-time while still communicating well and collaborating with teammates.  

     

    Qualifications:  

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education/experience in a related field.    

  • Experience: Five or more years of web application development experience with expertise in at least one of the programming languages and frameworks we use every day (PHP, JavaScript, React). 

  • Expertise with the following technologies:   

  • React

  • Node.js, Express, TypeScript, and NPM   

  • CSS, Sass, CSS Modules 

  • Front-end build tools like Webpack, Grunt, and Babel   

  • WordPress and PHP

  • AWS services such as Lambda, S3, API Gateway  

  • GraphQL, MongoDB   

  • A track record of building products from design through delivery.  

  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.  

  • Strong collaborative capabilities and inter-personal communication skills.  

  • A desire to learn and grow abilities.   

  • Open to new ideas and methods.     

  • Diverse development experience with participation in build vs. buy decisions and the successful integration and delivery of multi-vendor solutions.  

  • Experience taking the lead in agile processes and tailoring SLDC’s and internal standards to organizational need and maturity.  

  • Comfortable with unit testing, CI/CD techniques  

  • Knowledgeable of, and capable of implementing, current accessibility best practices   

  • A solid understanding of monitoring, reliability, and performance optimization for both client and server-side applications.  

  • Familiarity with cloud architectures and services.  

  • Clear ability to mentor others 

     

    Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $104,100 to $147,000. We typically pay between $104,100 and $132,700, depending on experience and qualifications.
