Amazon Principal Technical Program Manager, Efficiency & Performance, Alloy in Seattle, Washington

Description

In eCommerce, we operate in an ultra-low-margin business. Our ability to operate efficiently makes the difference between profit and loss, or between prices a customer is happy or displeased with. It is at the core of our business DNA, enshrined in both the Leadership Principle of Frugality and the Amazon flywheel (lower cost structure). The costs of running the Amazon website are now measured in billions of dollars, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that we are realizing an economy of scale, rather than having scale kill our economy.

The Alloy team is a central performance engineering team optimizing for all service teams within Amazon via efficient use of AWS resources as they build and grow their services. This team is special in 3 ways (1) business impact to both top and bottom line, (2) solving hard interesting problems via central services and solutions (3) High visibility and growing professional network - we work with a group of Principal Engineers and Distinguished Engineers closely.

With the performance engineering focus, we are looking for seasoned principal technical program manager to help identify and achieve software optimization opportunities leveraging tools like Amazon Profiler, as well as opportunities in other resources such as Storage (S3, Redshift, DynamoDB) and GPU.

As a Principal Technical Program Manager on this team, you will work with stakeholders across Amazon to learn, innovate, and enhance the performance and efficiency of software solutions in all areas of Amazon's software stack. You will search for, uncover, and improve software and architecture inefficiencies in the vast Amazon ecosystem and build new central services that will result in millions of dollars of savings in infrastructure costs while mitigating capacity and availability risks. You will manage important technology programs with broad cross-organizational and cross-business impact. You will define requirements, negotiate priorities, and deliver the right solutions and mechanisms. You will represent, verbally and in writing, complex decisions, tough trade-offs, and potential solutions clearly to senior leaders. You will align teams towards coherent technology strategies. You will bring clarity to complexity, probe assumptions, illuminate pitfalls, and foster share understanding. You will model best practices in communications (status reports, program documents, FAQ, stakeholder management), planning and scheduling, identifying critical path, managing within budget and resource constraints, managing risk, and escalating appropriately. This is a great opportunity to be involved from the beginning in this new efficiency initiative and be part of the program that will make a lasting impact at Amazon! Come join a team that encourages and thrives on innovations to delight customers!
