AWS is looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to become part of a global data center engineering team, responsible for the design and continuous innovation within our rapidly expanding data center footprint. This position can be based out of Seattle (WA), Austin (TX), or Herndon (VA).

The Data Center Principal Mechanical Engineer has the ability to understand the customer demand as well as the technology & business opportunities that exist in order to lead the organization forward. You understand key problems, and propose and analyze multiple solutions to produce the most efficient, cost effective, resilient, and scalable mechanical designs achievable. The Data Center Principal Mechanical Engineer provides the vision, rationale and recommendations to leadership teams from AWS and work with external industry partners for next-generation data center design, while ensuring current systems meet performance and operational standards. As a Data Center Principal Mechanical Engineer, you are a leader and visionary in your field, working within and overseeing the work of cross-functional teams that include: technical program management, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, supply chain management, operations, end users, safety and security. You will drive continuous advancements and improvements with our designs, and communicate technical direction to Senior Management. Externally, you will provide high-level guidance to design teams, equipment and construction suppliers through specification reviews, design reviews and qualification test reviews. You will develop technical partnerships with the industry partners to define AWS-enabled designs to accelerate capacity delivery. You will also participate in external forums/consortiums to understand current trends and developments within the industry.

Key job responsibilities

Your daily responsibilities include all aspects of the data center lifecycle:

  • From many years applicable experience, you understand the key aspects of legacy and modern at-scale data center mechanical systems. Using this experience, you identify improvement areas in existing and next-generation data center designs to address: high capital/operational costs, reduced efficiencies, high-levels of maintenance, security issues and safety risks.

  • You conceive, initiate and lead projects with widespread impact on infrastructure design, innovation and implementation.

  • You are responsible for and provide oversight for the review of next-generation data center mechanical products and designs.

  • You demonstrate ability to review business cases and analysis models including Total Cost of Ownership and Return on Investment to select projects and designs.

  • You are responsible for and oversee the creation of AWS data center basis of design & project specifications to drive standardization in the data center mechanical performance.

  • You decompose complex problems or new technologies or topologies to distill underlying risks and benefits, and identify straightforward and actionable solutions to reduce risk.

  • You work closely with hardware designers to optimize the interfaces between the IT equipment and data center facilities as well as understand the future trends and initiatives in IT equipment and infrastructure technology, communicating these to internal design teams.

  • You actively and aggressively grow and coach the engineering team through group forums and one-on-one coaching and mentoring to ensure development and promotion of the top engineers inside Amazon.

  • You oversee and plan engineering goals for key initiatives that support future projects and growth.

  • You work independently and have frequent reviews with business leadership, other Principal Engineers and Sr Engineers across AWS.

  • You actively facilitate the escalation of low-level project & product issue to senior engineering and business leadership.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering. Will also accept equivalent domain specific technical experience in lieu of a degree.

• 7+ years of experience in data center design and product development/HVAC design/related product development.

• Thorough understanding and use of principals, theories and concepts in mechanical engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

• Masters or PhD in Mechanical Engineering.

• Deep understanding of data center mechanical systems and cooling control schemes.

• Prior experience working with an interdisciplinary team to execute product designs from concept to production including specification, design, prototyping, validation and testing.

• Experience with full lifecycle and proficiency at completing tasks to meet associated milestones.

• Familiarity of product verification using testing and experience for product certification testing by third party lab.

• Experience evaluating design, performance and logistical tradeoffs for rack and room level products.

• Proficiency with FEA and CFD-based analysis tools.

• Demonstrated understanding of engineering documentation, electrical and mechanical diagrams, and standard operating procedures.

• Experience designing air- or water-cooled systems for high-heat density applications.

• Knowledge of industry standards such as ASHRAE, NFPA, ANSI etc.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $130,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $252,900/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
