The Network Operations team is looking for highly motivated individuals to support the day to day operations of our global network infrastructure, and drive the stability and sustainability of our next-generation network as it continues to grow. The Network Operations team is responsible for maintaining the health of Amazon’s Retail and Web Services network. This team plays a critical role in responding to operational changes in the network, determining root cause, and working with internal teams and external vendors/ISPs with the goal of returning to a fully operational state. Additionally, the Network Operations team is responsible for performing changes to maintain the reliability of the network as it scales.

Key job responsibilities

Network Development Engineers will:

• Be responsible for deploying network infrastructure across all of our network fabrics that support the Amazon Retail Service, Kindle, Payments and multiple AWS services.

• Deploy, scale, and automate our network across multiple global datacenters. This includes existing footprints and greenfield locations.

• Drive scaling of current network designs to meet the demand of our customers.

• Create simple, repetitive deployment processes that increase both velocity and quality.

• Work closely with our internal customers on designs/solutions; bringing those designs/solutions from concept to production.

• Create and update our network standards and ensure that the network is deployed to these standards.

• Create and implement changes on the network.

• Work closely with our automation teams in defining the tools that allow us to scale at higher volume.

A day in the life

• Work in a 24x7 team on call rotation, with ability to drive into workplace for critical events/needs.

• Manage customers during problem resolution and operating efficiently under pressure.

• Sit at the computer during scheduled work hours with appropriate breaks while maintaining a high level of alertness and attention to detail.

• Travel to data center/network sites and Amazon/customer offices as needed.

About the team

Product Engineering Team sits within the DCF Organization and are responsible for all aspects of planning the core networking datacenter network. The team is located between Seattle and Dublin with two primary services Platform Topology and Efficiency (PTE) and the Platform and Features (Pioneers). The team has overall responsibility for managing the hardware and software required to support the datacenter core networks. The team ensures there are defined transition plans, maximizing the cost effectiveness of our topologies for the full lifecyle from initial designs to decommissioning. We use the latest hardware to provide the best user experience for customers.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience in a large–scale network environment.

  • 1+ years experience in a network focused hands-on technical role working with IP routing protocols/technologies and platforms in large scale data center and/or WAN network environments.

  • 1+ years experience in a technical on-call capacity, responding to customer impacting events, mitigating and root cause analysis of those events.

  • 1+ years Unix/Linux command line experience.

  • 1+ years experience with internet routing protocols and concepts: TCP/IP, BGP, MPLS, ISIS and/or OSPF.

  • 1+ years of experience with network operating systems such as Cisco IOS and Junos.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough understanding of TCP/IP networking, IP routing, Server Load Balancing, and Network Security architecture and core technologies such as IP, TCP, OSPF/IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, Server Load Balancers, Firewalls, ACLs, DNS, DHCP, IPAM, LDAP, NFS, etc.

  • Knowledge of network analysis fundamentals and robust troubleshooting skills; specifically, network performance analysis.

  • Experience working with customers to diagnose a problem, and work toward resolution

  • Strong desire to build, ability to multitask, sense of ownership and urgency.

  • Strong Unix/Linux skills and ability to script in Perl, Python, shell, C or C++ is highly desirable as is a strong understanding of load balancing and layer 4-7 technologies.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s functional/technical depth and complexity for this role·

  • Meets/exceeds Amazon’s leadership principles requirements for this role

  • Experience with Agile development methodologies and DevOps environments.

  • Knowledge of IT best practice frameworks (ITIL, COBIT) and Operational Excellence concepts or methodologies is a plus

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $91,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
