The Indigenous Wellness Research Institute —a National Institutes of Health–designated Center of Excellence—collaborates with indigenous people in three areas: research, tribal capacity building and knowledge sharing. The Institute brings together community, tribal, academic and government resources, increasing its capacity to develop innovative, culture-centered and interdisciplinary social and behavioral research and education.

IWRI has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Health Interventionist. This NIH R01, Wakaya: Rising Up for Choctaw Youth Health, a collaboration between UW investigators and Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, is an outdoor, land-based healing project that is grounded in Choctaw culture. This is a multilevel, youth leadership development randomized control trial that seeks to increase physical activity, lower sedentary behaviors by connecting youth to nature, culture, and healthy coping skills. This project draws from the academic fields of positive psychology, social work, land health leadership, and exercise sciences. It is further entrenched in Indigenous concepts of land-based healing, cultural continuity, identity, and ecological kinship.

Job location: This position is located in Durant, Oklahoma

The Health Interventionist will implement the program to ensure program initiative and goals are met and participants receive the highest level of benefit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit, interview and screen potential subjects and determine eligibility according to established criteria.

  • Plan, lead and facilitate interventions to promote health and wellness.

  • Teach curricula for various topics on participant health and wellness objectives.

  • Coordinate and implement individual and group support services for youth to engage in physical activity outdoors, healthy nutrition habits, and mental illness and substance use disorders prevention.

  • Plan and organize outreach educational activities related to physical activity, healthful eating, and mental health and substance use disorder prevention.

  • Conduct specialized trainings to increase competencies in physical and mental health prevention content areas.

  • Deliver survey assessments and collect data from participants in a variety of settings including community wellness centers, schools or participants homes, as needed.

  • Implement research protocol and monitor participant adherence to protocol; take action to correct problems such as deviation from protocol requirements; verify accuracy of research data.

  • Prepare narrative and/or statistical reports, as needed.

  • Use spreadsheet and database software to develop and maintain records.

  • Assist in establishing and maintaining contact with community agencies, and/or health care providers; refer participants to community service agencies as appropriate.

  • Travel and transport participants to intervention sites as needed.

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Two years of college level course work in a relevant academic area AND Two years of experience performing work in support of clinical, biomedical, or behavioral research studies involving human subject OR equivalent education/experience. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • General computer skills

  • Experience with MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint

  • Valid Driver’s License

  • Knowledge and/or experience of Choctaw or Indigenous culture

  • Two years of experience working with youth, or

  • Two years of experience working in health, social services, education or related field

  • Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather conditions

  • Can comfortably lift 30 lbs
