DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center) is a nonprofit organization working to help people with the complex needs of homelessness, substance use disorders, and serious mental illness achieve their highest potential for health and well-being through comprehensive services, treatment, and housing. JOB DEFINITION:

The Community Resource Program Assistant assists with the in-kind gifts program, recruits and trains new volunteers, and coordinates volunteer projects throughout the agency. This position is a part of the Fund Development team and represents DESC and its needs to the community.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit, interview, select, train, recognize and retain volunteers.

  • Train incoming volunteers and set expectations for each volunteer’s time commitment, performance, and ethical responsibilities.

  • Assist with volunteer orientations and training curriculum.

  • Supervise coordination of volunteer schedules and facilitate communication between onsite program staff and volunteers.

  • Steward volunteers to a positive and rewarding experience with DESC, addressing needs and concerns in a timely manner and demonstrating appreciation for their contribution to DESC’s mission.

  • Maintain volunteer records in a Salesforce database, including hours served and upcoming shifts.

  • Assist in the scheduling, supervision, and execution of group volunteer service projects.

  • Assist with the procurement, processing, and distribution of in-kind donations by coordinating volunteer efforts and filling in for volunteer drivers or the Community Resource and Events Manager, as necessary.

  • Work occasional weekend days to assist with volunteer group projects.

  • Coordinate the work of a group of volunteers who pick up, sort and distribute clothing and other donated items throughout the organization using volunteer efforts when possible, and filling in when needed.

  • Coordinate delivery or pick-ups of in-kind gifts from the donation center with staff across DESC programs.

  • Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as needed.

  • Assist with agency tours, events, and community presentations, as necessary.

  • Assist with the preparation of funding requests, reports, newsletters, and other materials as relates to the volunteer program.

  • Maintain safety and security by monitoring all general access areas and enforcing project rules.

  • Intervene in crises, respond to emergencies, and initiate action as required, including contact with emergency response systems

  • Work cooperatively with DESC Fund Development, program, and maintenance staff.

  • Support all staff in their efforts to work effectively with volunteers within their programs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA degree preferred. Experience may be substituted for degree.

  • Experience coordinating volunteer programs preferred. Experience in human services desirable.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills are required.

  • Experience in MS Office products including Word, Excel and Power Point

  • Washington State Driver's License and insurable driving record.

  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 25 pounds in weight.

  • Ability to work effectively with clients displaying a wide range of unpleasant and/or bizarre behaviors

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with staff and volunteers from various backgrounds.

  • Ability to represent DESC in public speaking and tabling events.

  • Subscribe to a philosophy of cooperation and continuity across programs and of consideration and respect for clients.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience coordinating volunteer or in-kind donation program

  • Experience in a human services organization

  • Experience using a donor database, Salesforce preferred
