Position Description

Job Summary

What's the job?

The Automation Engineer II will assist with the development and implementation of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects, production, processing methods and controls in a manner consistent with CertainTeed Gypsum Vision, Mission, Values and Objectives (VMVO). Through the application of engineering fundamentals and advanced process control tools, this position will ensure that processes are centered, capable and in control; reduce process variations; and resolve special causes variation. The Automation Engineer II will also support the plant and company strategic initiatives including capital projects that involve electrical process control systems and provide leadership in the implementation and support of plant automation, electrical and database systems.

  • Reports directly to the Maintenance & Engineering Manager.

  • Provides technical support and maintenance of electrical, control and automation equipment (PLC / HMI / VFD / Instrumentation / Networks). Implements required actions to avoid breakdowns and obsolescence.

  • Assists maintenance team with troubleshooting and repair of electrical, control and automation equipment.

  • Ensures SG and CT Gypsum’s standards of safety, quality and reliability are built into electrical, automation and control systems.

  • Collects, interprets and extrapolates data from the production process to monitor current equipment performance against established objectives, analyzes operating problems, makes improvement recommendations and leads implementation of required corrective actions.

  • Manages implementation of electrical and automation improvement projects. Coordinates contractor’s activities.

  • Ensures full documentation of all projects and equipment updated according to World Class Manufacturing (WCM) standards. Prepares and maintains Wiring, Process & Instrumentation (P&ID) and Configuration diagrams.

  • Interfaces with corporate IT and local IT infrastructure direction.

  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as needed and / or requested by management.

  • May consult with and/or assist other CertainTeed Gypsum North American plants on issues.

Required Qualifications

What do you bring?

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering or equivalent experience.

  • One to three (1-3) years of applied professional experience in electrical process control, instrumentation, automation, industrial protocols / networking.

  • Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC).

  • Knowledge in integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing environment.

  • Flexible, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving capabilities to work effectively in corporate, manufacturing and team environments.

  • Ability to provide leadership and innovation at all levels of the organization.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • In-depth knowledge of electricity in low and medium voltage installations, HMIs, PLCs.

  • Proficient in Electrical CAD software.

  • Experience in development of industrial electrical and automation engineering projects.
