Ellis Medicine Supervisor of Psychiatry- The Family Room in Schenectady, New York

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Family Room program is a groundbreaking mental health crisis diversion program, the first of its kind in New York State. Located within the Ellis Mental Health Outpatient Services building, the Family Room is a quiet and comfortable atmosphere for youth and their families, called “guests” to receive support in their time of need. The purpose of the Family Room program is to provide guests with person-centered crisis counseling, referrals, and other community resources needed to prevent unnecessary Emergency Room visits. The Family Room program staff consists of peer specialists, a social worker, and care manager, all of whom work closely together to provide direct care and advocacy for a diverse and vulnerable population. The Family Room staff specializes in a wide range of treatment interventions, including trauma-informed care and integrated mental health and substance use treatment.

The Family Room Psychiatry Supervisor is responsible for the overall clinical functioning of the peer specialists and social worker at The Family Room, including direct supervisory sessions, clinical interventions, chart reviews, and provision of performance evaluations. The Supervisor assists in program strategic planning and development, under the direction of the Clinical Manager and in collaboration with other members of leadership. Additionally, The Supervisor position is forward-facing in the community, with many opportunities for collaboration with other community agencies on an ongoing basis.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT(S):

  • The individual will be a qualified health professional with a Master’s Degree from an accredited institution; LCSW preferred.

  • 3 years mental health experience

  • Some supervisory/managerial experience is preferred.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Should be able to push/pull, lift/move a minimum of 35 lb., at times while wearing a lead vest weighing 20 pounds. Be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing, and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to be stationary at a workstation for a prolonged period time in addition to being able to squat, bend, twist, lift or be mobile for a reasonable length of time and distance. Communication requirements include the ability to comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to communicate and read the English language.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

    Clinical Supervisor responsibilities:

  • Provide individual clinical supervision to assigned staff on regular basis, and as needed

  • Consistent review/revision of clinical program offerings according to participant needs and program viability.

  • Oversight of crisis situations/complex clinical matters, including performing clinical and safety assessments on an as-needed basis

  • Provide initial and ongoing training of Family Room staff, with topics including, but not limited to: learning the Family Room’s role in the community, performing client assessment, types of clinical interventions, community resources, and electronic medical records (EMR)

  • Utilizes the CASE approach to suicide/homicide risk to assess safety and provide accurate interventions to mitigate harm to patient and community

  • Complete comprehensive performance appraisals for assigned supervisee(s) at designated times.

  • Function as program clinical liaison, ensuring adequate communication and collaboration among employees to ensure quality care and best practice.

  • Ensure compliance with program development initiatives and evidence-based practices.

  • Hold staff accountable to these standards including team monitoring, education and interventions, including progressive discipline where indicated.

  • Work with Outpatient Leadership to ensure that the program meets best practice standards in line with The Family Room program’s mission, vision, and values.

  • Respond to physical plant needs ensuring appropriate follow up and action

  • Maintain awareness of current Family Room financials in collaboration with Outpatient Leadership

  • Develop and implement annual quality improvement plan, and quality initiatives for the program in collaboration with the department’s Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QA/PI) Committee.

  • Facilitate staff meetings, attend monthly Quality Assurance/Process Improvement committee meeting, and any other departmental meetings where indicated.

  • Provide ongoing outreach to community agencies as well as participate in relevant meetings outside the agency representing The Family Room interests and offerings to community partners

  • Act as a liaison between program partnerships and participate in all relevant partnership meetings

  • Collaborate with leadership on the development of policies and procedures.

  • Provide ongoing assessment and redesign of protocols, forms, and EMR software interface streamlining patient flow, staff efficiency, and quality patient care with evolving program needs.

  • Complete all necessary documentation that is required, including clinical practice documentation and administrative reports, per agency and funding guidelines.

  • Complete necessary reports and paperwork in a well-written and timely manner.

  • Adhere to hospital policies and procedures.

  • Adhere to mandatory education requirements

  • Completion of annual health assessment form as required

  • Remain current on inoculation requirements

  • Remain current on professional licensure

  • Perform other duties as assigned

    Salary Range: $31.50-$47.26 Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
