Ellis Medicine Anesthesia Technician in Schenectady, New York

The Anesthesia Technician is an integral member of the anesthesia team providing care to patients undergoing surgical or other invasive procedures. The primary responsibility of the position is to assist licensed anesthesia providers in the acquisition, preparation and application of the equipment and supplies required for the administration of anesthesia. The anesthesia technician, along with other members of the perioperative team, utilizes resources in a cost effective manner in an environment that promotes continuous quality improvement.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education: This position requires a minimum education of a high school diploma or GED.

Experience: Previous work experience in a surgical environment with knowledge of medical terminology is desired. Knowledge of surgical procedure terminology and basic pharmacology is preferred.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

  • The anesthesia technician performs the responsibilities of the position under the direct supervision of a licensed anesthesia provider and/or a registered nurse

  • Supports the practice of licensed anesthesia providers in all anesthetizing locations

  • Supports and promotes a team approach between unit staff

  • Understands and practices the principles of aseptic technique

  • Demonstrates ability to maintain sterility of the surgical field when in OR suites

  • Recognizes the boundaries of the semi-restricted and restricted areas within the surgical environment. Utilizes the appropriate surgical attire and PPE within these areas

  • Follows established hand hygiene practices to prevent the direct and indirect transmission of microorganisms

  • Employs behaviors which safeguard all sterile fields from contamination

  • Prepares and maintains monitoring devices and anesthesia delivery systems pre, intra, and post anesthesia

  • Ensures that all anesthesia equipment is cleaned and maintained, and in a condition of readiness for surgical procedures

  • Troubleshoots, at a basic level, malfunctioning equipment and either makes necessary repairs or arranges for repairs with Biomedical Engineering or the equipment manufacturer

  • Assembles invasive lines for monitoring equipment in preparation for surgical procedures

  • Ensures the availability of emergency backup equipment or services as needed during surgery

  • The anesthesia technicians will maintain a sufficient inventory of all equipment and supplies.

  • Establishes appropriate par levels of supplies to ensure adequate supply and minimal inventory

  • Performs regular inventory of supplies.

  • Maintains competence in electronic materials management systems to procure needed stock

  • Receives supplies from distribution department, validates receipts against orders, stocks items in appropriate locations

  • Regularly inspects stock items to validate shelf life and rotates stock to avoid expiration of dated items

  • Applies knowledge of decontamination and sterilization of equipment used during anesthesia administration

  • Possesses working knowledge to assist anesthesia in bronchoscopy, TEE, and difficult airway procedures

  • Assist with process of obtaining blood gases and delivers to the laboratory.

  • Manages the contents of anesthesia specialty carts and maintains surveillance logs

  • Anesthesia administration carts, regional anesthesia carts, malignant hyperthermia cart, difficult airway cart, pediatric anesthesia cart

  • Assumes call responsibilities for cardiothoracic procedures

  • Adheres to policies and procedures as outlined in the Exposure Control Manual regarding:

  • Bloodborne Pathogens

  • Disposal of needles, syringes, and sharps

  • Cleanup procedures for blood and body fluid spills

  • Assumes call responsibilities for cardiothoracic procedures

    Annual Health Assessment Salary Range: $18.33-26.58 Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
