Zurich North America has an exciting opportunity for a talented attorney to join the Legal Services team as an Assistant General Counsel within our prestigious Corporate Law department. This position reports to the Division Counsel for the Crop, Direct Markets, and Life, Accident & Health Business Units. This position is hybrid and based in Illinois in our Schaumburg headquarters. Limited travel may be expected.

This key role will provide strategic legal counsel on a broad range of insurance regulatory matters, with an emphasis on our Crop business unit. The Assistant General Counsel is responsible for enabling the business to achieve its strategic and commercial goals in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and to protect and preserve Zurich’s tangible and intangible assets.

As a strategic partner, the ideal candidate will have experience with Crop insurance, with an emphasis on regulatory issues that may impact the organization and stakeholders. They will partner with the business and provide expert legal advice on a wide variety of insurance regulatory matters including the development and distribution of insurance products, and market conduct examinations.

This Assistant General Counsel will also review contracts as appropriate, address corporate policy and compliance issues, as well as provide legal advice on insurance laws and regulations along the business value chain, from product development and digital initiatives to distributing products in the market, supporting the business to achieve its goals.

As a member of the Legal Services team, the Assistant General Counsel will:

  • Function as a strategic partner to clients by consulting on complex regulatory issues;

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with business unit leaders, functional subject matter experts, and other support unit personnel assigned to the business unit, to ensure the appropriate level of context and knowledge for the provision of effective legal guidance and delivery of problem-solving strategies;

  • Support management in developing open and transparent relationships with key stakeholders consistent with the organization’s values and compliant with the spirit and letter of the law;

  • Proactively collaborate with business stakeholders in the development and execution of short-term and long-term strategies by providing legal perspective and partnering to problem-solve and identify creative, compliant solutions;

  • Communicate all business unit needs to the appropriate Legal Services team member(s) to secure the necessary resources and ensure timely and accurate support is provided.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor and 7 or more years of experience in the Legal areaAND

  • Member of the Bar

  • Knowledge of NILS, Lexis or Westlaw

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge or direct experience with Crop insurance products, with an emphasis on insurance regulatory issues and distribution.

  • Ability to engage, inform and influence decisions at the senior level of the organization

  • Insurance industry experience, preferably with Crop insurance products

  • Knowledge of distribution channels and agent issues

  • Ability to work in a team-based, solutions-oriented environment

  • Creative problem-solver adept at working in a fast-paced environment and successfully managing competing interests of multiple internal and external stakeholders
