Sarasota County Government Landscaping Skilled Trades Worker in Sarasota, Florida

Do you enjoy working outside and have a green thumb? As a Landscaping Skilled Trades Worker, you will provide irrigation maintenance, landscaping, and pest management for multiple countywide Sarasota County Buildings.   • Maintenance of green space at primary Facilities’ Managed sites, Lawns, Landscape Beds, and Planters.

  • Prune trees & palms from the ground by hand pruning or with gas-powered tools, prune shrubs & ground covers using hand tools or gas-powered hedge shears.

  • Test irrigation systems, repairs, and reports any deficiencies.

  • Coordinate and implement maintenance needs with contractors and contracted services in conjunction with the Supervisor, Horticultural Specialist, and Planner/Scheduler.

  • Inspect landscape work performed by contractors, including irrigation, mowing & edging, weeding of plant beds, mulching beds, trimming foliage, and herbicide application.

  • Ensure compliance with County standards, policies, and ordinances regarding the application of fertilizer, pest management, and pesticides.

  • Maintain trees and palms for appearance, canopy clearance, storm prep, and obstructions to pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

  • Integrated Pest Management Program & Services at all County Facilities:

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. *On-Call Required.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or its equivalent.

  • Three (3) years of experience in performing landscaping, grounds maintenance, and irrigation systems.

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License at the time of hire.

  • Must possess a Limited Lawn and Ornamental license or the ability to obtain within six (6) months from the date of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certified Arborist and/or Florida Horticultural Professional credentials.

  • The ability to identify plants and know the environments in which they thrive, diagnose and treat them accordingly.

  • Knowledge of growth habits of Florida-friendly native trees, bushes, and plants.

Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

** Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of five (5) years.

CJIS Clearance: **The successful candidate will be subject to an extensive background check(s) as a part of the hiring process.

Starting Pay Range: $21.07 (Step 1) may be higher based on experience
