HOW YOU WILL IMPACT OUR MISSION

The Philanthropy Senior Editor researches, develops, writes, and edits compelling content in digital, print, and live presentation format on behalf of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance's Philanthropy and Marketing departments. This position reports to the Purpose Communications Manager.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Create unique, compelling, and engaging content for all organizational materials that effectively communicates the story of the organization’s mission and vision.

  • Leads Philanthropy’s editorial team and interfaces daily the with Marketing and Philanthropy teams

  • Play a strategic role in the ongoing growth of the organization’s fundraising campaign results.

  • Develops content in a manner that drives donor engagement and response

  • Develops stewardship pieces and an integrated mix of strategic donor communications that equip the Philanthropy team to achieve campaign and annual revenue targets

  • Edits content and proofreads a variety of communication types, and works closely with Design team to ensure collaborative success.

    WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

    The Philanthropy Senior Editor is a dynamic leader managing the full spectrum of philanthropy communications from strategic planning through tactical execution and analysis. In this role, you’ll leverage communications to share lifechanging stories of our local and global conservation efforts, help garner support for initiatives at the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and more. You are comfortable and adept at working with people at all levels of an organization, including senior executives. As the liaison between philanthropy and marketing, this position is critical to the success of the goals and vision of both departments. You’ll manage and mentor a team of Philanthropy Writers, editing their work and ensuring philanthropic and fundraising best practices are used while keeping communications in alignment with brand voice.

    JOB EXPERIENCE

  • Must have prior experience in copywriting, editing, and content marketing.

  • Experience developing and crafting copy for nonprofit fundraising, advocacy, and target-driven donor response required.

  • Editorial experience required.

    EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in communication, journalism or related field and/or equivalent specialized training required.

    SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Fundraising communication tactics and best practices knowledge required.

  • Reader or audience appeal knowledge.

  • Strong functional knowledge of editing, grammar, and writing rules.

  • Able to clearly communicate to internal and external stakeholders both orally and in writing.

  • Able to use Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple assignments with competing deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to remain adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines to meet business needs.

  • Able to collaborate and work effectively with others in a diverse team environment.

  • Ability to use a variety of project management software including Freshdesk and Airtable.
