Outdoor Program Manager

Girl Scouts San Diego is seeking an innovative and passionate Outdoor Program Manager to develop, implement and manage a robust portfolio of year-round outdoor programming, events and summer camp programs where girl scouts in San Diego and Imperial counties can explore their strengths and take on new challenges through relevant and engaging outdoor experiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement and manage a portfolio of high-quality, innovative, safe and engaging age-appropriate year-round outdoor programming, including summer camps and high adventure activities that align with GSUSA curriculum and progressions, and girl and adult member interests.

  • Hire, train, and provide direction and leadership to outdoor program staff (regular, weekend and seasonal), program volunteers and community partners to ensure delivery of high-quality outdoor programming experiences.

  • Build and maintain positive work and team relationships and environment; continuously improve/alter techniques to meet the changing needs of staff, volunteers and outdoor programs.

  • Develop and monitor outdoor program operational and supply budgets; ensure expenditures are cost effective, properly documented and meet programming goals and objectives.

  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers and partners to build and expand the emphasis on the importance and relevancy of outdoor experiences for girls and families throughout the year.

  • Ensure compliance, safety and risk management standards and practices are in place to mitigate risk in compliance with American Camp Association (ACA), Girl Scout safety activity checkpoints, council and GSUSA policies and procedures, federal, state and local regulations.

  • Manage camp accreditation and compliance processes and visits, health and safety inspections and compliance with federal, state and local regulations and guidelines.

  • Negotiate and execute cost-effective seasonal and year-round vendor contracts to support outdoor programming and camp operations (i.e. food service, equine services, certifications, etc.).

  • Partner closely with property and internal teams to ensure facilities meet or exceed regulatory and council standards for safe and effective use.

  • Develop, implement and maintain standard operating procedures for all outdoor and related programming.

  • Partner with the marketing department to develop and implement a year-round marketing campaign and materials for all outdoor programming and events.

  • Keep current with experiential/adventure education trends and promote the best use and development of camp facilities.

  • Onsite presence at overnight camps during summer camp (June - August) to support effective camp program operations and staff support.

  • Models’ high levels of motivation, performance, and commitment. Creates, implements, and supports council initiatives and policies.

  • Provide responsive and timely customer service and support to staff, parents, volunteers, community partners and program participants.

  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion and cultural awareness and promoting outdoor education programming to diverse communities and backgrounds.

  • Performance of other duties and expectations to meet team and council objectives and as assigned.

  • Experience in outdoor education, and a minimum of at least 3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in developing and managing youth outdoor programming, activities and experiences to include overnight and day camp with diverse populations.

  • Valid drivers’ license, proof of insurance, and access to reliable transportation. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required.

  • Belief in the mission and values of Girl Scouting; be willing to subscribe to the principles expressed in the Promise and Law and Girl Scouts San Diego mission, vision and values.

  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills; minimum 5 years’ demonstrated success supervising and managing diverse teams.

  • Experience developing and successfully implementing programming and events for both youth and adults. Knowledge of Girl Scout programming preferred but not required.

  • Knowledge and experience with organized camp accreditation processes, guidelines, and federal, state, and local regulations.

  • Creative problem solver and consensus builder who can deftly manage competing expectations and creatively use resources to deliver.

  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills with the ability to identify and leverage relevant data to use in planning and decision-making.

  • Ability to cultivate, motivate and maintain effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, parents, community partners and vendors from diverse backgrounds and experiences.

  • Must be able and available to stay onsite overnight at sleepaway camps during summer months (June - August).

  • Commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness of the various communities in San Diego and Imperial counties.

  • Current lifeguard, challenge course or related certifications are highly desired.

    Hiring annual salary range: $70,000 - $76,000 (DOE)
