Hourly Pay Range (Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum):

$101.394 - $130.831 - $160.268

The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position.  The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.

What You Will Do

The Medical Radiation Physicist is a position with three general functions. Under the direction of the Lead Medical Radiation Physicists, this position will be responsible for performing clinical medical physics, supervising dosimetrists, as well as performing administrative tasks to ensure the accurate and safe use of radiation machines and radioactive sources in Radiation Oncology.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree Medical Physics, Radiological Physics or a closely related field

  • 1 Year Current radiation oncology outpatient experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Medical Physics, Radiological Physics or a closely related field.

  • 3 Years Current radiation oncology outpatient experience

Other Qualification Requirements

  • Board certification or board eligible in Therapeutic Radiological Physics by the American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physicists. Must be certified within two years of hire date.

Essential Functions

  • Clinical physics tasksAssists with acceptance testing and commissioning of new equipment.Provides important consultant function regarding patient radiation treatment planning proposing several alternatives, and discusses probable procedure with physicians.Implements new procedures, plans new and innovative devices to improve patient care and treatment, i.e., implemented new isocentric breast technique allowing machine patient work load to be evened out maximizing productivity of staff.Consults, advises, and provides direction for staff and physicians in patient dosimetry calculation, setting up of treatment portals and ensures treatment delivery is consistent with physicians orders.Supervises and instructs patient treatment planning for dosimetrists in all types of radiation therapy modes and applications.

  • Medical equipment managementResponsible for ensuring that the equipment requirements of the radiation oncology departments are maintained at the highest level and updated as required.Provides follow up testing after repair when necessary to ensure machines return to manufacturer's specifications.Supervises field service engineers and coordinates repair to minimize machine down time.

  • Quality assurancePerforms Quality Control Measurements, compares results to baseline values and initiates appropriate corrective action (if necessary).Responsible for performing procedures in place for measuring performance levels of the equipment and required to organize the physics department to meet all state, federal and accreditation requirements.Exercises responsibility for accurate specification of dose delivered by each of the x-ray and radioactive sources. Collaborates with the RT staff in carrying out a continuous program of calibration measurements to maintain such data current at all times.Reviews patient charts to ensure treatment is delivered is consistent with physician orders.

  • Radiation safetyConsults frequently with staff regarding problems relative to radiation safety and radiation protection.Has responsibility for inspecting and implementing all provisions and revisions of procedure relative to California Environmental Health and Safety Regulations, particularly as applied to patients as well as all professional and technical staff.Serves as a member of the Radiation Safety Committee.Acts as department backup representative for State DOHS inspections and regulatory compliance issues.

  • Training and educationProvides continuing education lectures to both the technologist and dosimetrist staff, as well as to associated allied personnel within the Radiation Oncology Departments.Assesses performance of dosimetry staff for annual employee evaluation.Contributes to the education and training of staff dosimetrists.Provides input for department annual budget and resource allocation.
