San Diego Gas & Electric Aviation Field Operations Advisor in San Diego, California

Primary Purpose:

Provides supervision for Aviation Operations within the SDGandE service territory. Responsible for planning, coordinating with appropriate agencies, training field-helicopter personnel, and ensuring adherence to policies and procedures of field helicopter work. Ensures hazards are continually updated in support of the Aviation Safety Management System (ASMS) and that lessons learned are communicated throughout the company for educational and operational purposes. Work closely with Aviation Services to ensure support for customers requiring helicopter services is met.

This position will work with Contractors through the Contract Manager directly or their back office support for any assigned work, to lead status meetings with the contract manager to review progress and quality of assigned work. This position will assist as needed with providing SDGandE protocols, scoping of work, and contract adjustments where valid and approved by SDGandE.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership for Aviation Services Department (ASD) Aviation Operations and personnel assigned as direct reports. Maintain oversight of helicopter and personnel working with aviation assets in the field. Ensure proper planning, execution, and debrief are completed on all field jobs in accordance with company policies and procedures. For direct reports, manage performance, conduct quarterly and annual performance reviews, and assign workload. For contractors, work through the Contract Manager directly or their back office support for any assigned work, to lead status meetings with the contract manager to review progress and quality of assigned work.
  • Ensure proper workload of personnel, helicopters, and experience/training meets the needs of the job. Report, track, and bring to conclusion near-miss events. Continually assess and recommend potential areas for improvement
  • Act as the safety advisor in the field. Ensure policies and procedures are followed during field work with helicopters.
  • Train personnel to safely conduct operations with helicopters. Organize, lead, and record all training required for knowledge and actions for field work around helicopters.
  • Ensure full support of Human External Cargo (HEC) conduct, planning, training, refresh, execution, and lessons learned.
  • Oversight of rigging for cargo and personnel- ensure lines and gear is inspected per the manufacturers recommendation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED or equivalent.
  • 6 years - Aviation, firefighting, emergency services or related experience.
  • 2 years - Experience in aviation (FAA Part 135 [Air Carrier and Operator Certification], Part 133 [Rotorcraft External Load Operators], or Part 91 [General Operations]), radio equipment.
  • 2 years - Experience with firefighting or emergency services response, dispatch and incident command system.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Must have strong organizational and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex issues to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Aviation, Fire Science, Emergency Management, or related field.
  • FAA Part 107 remote pilots license.
  • Experience managing teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to work in and analyze Google Maps, GPS tracking software and SAP.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability (and appropriate authority) to conduct extended flight operations and crew duties.
  • Ability to work for extended periods in harsh terrain.
  • Ability to work extended hours to include nights and weekends.
