Summary:

This position supports the company's Discovery Research function to advance preclinical drug development scientific initiatives. This position plans and executes in vivo and/or in vitro laboratory research to complete science-based projects under the direction of a supervisor. This position conducts experiments and collaborates with others on complex research projects relevant to long-term objectives to identify novel therapeutics and understand mechanisms of action.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualizes, designs, plans, performs, and analyzes scientific experimental studies in a safe and timely manner.

  • Performs experimental research in a laboratory setting under the direction of supervisor

  • Regularly multitasks and highly skilled at establishing timelines in addition to scheduling, following, and meeting them.

  • Analyzes data and draws conclusions on projects of moderate scope.

  • Shares findings internally and externally at scientific conferences.

  • Produces data and generates written reports with moderate guidance; provides input into the outlines and figures for papers.

  • Recognizes and assesses problems in experimental studies; demonstrates problem-solving skill by using professional concepts and company policies and procedures.

  • Manages a research program of moderate scope, including experimental design, execution, and analysis, under direction of supervisor.

  • Demonstrates potential for technical proficiency, scientific creativity, and independent thought (ie. In vivo/In vitro studies to understand mechanism of action for novel therapeutics)

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates strong analytical skills requiring the application of scientific theory and creative skills in the development of hypotheses and experimental approaches

  • Explains highly complex projects of moderate scope to junior team members

  • Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of information requires evaluation of identifiable factors

  • Trains others in their technical areas of expertise

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to define, set and meet deadlines, multitask, and prioritize resources based on project needs

  • Highly capable of utilizing advanced techniques

  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills as well as strong presentation skills and able to articulate findings to various levels to management. Must be able to adapt style to differing audiences and often advises others on difficult matters.

  • Ability to understand projects goals and capability to anticipate resource needs (delegation and/or collaboration on tasks required to meet goals)

  • In vivo mouse experience is required with familiarity with tissue regeneration models is preferred (i.e. liver/muscle/nerve)

  • Experience with IP/IV dosing, survival surgery, primary cell isolation/analysis is necessary with the ability to independently troubleshoot problems of diverse scope

  • In vivo/In vitro laboratory experience is required

  • Experience with complex laboratory techniques is necessary with the ability to independently troubleshoot problems of diverse scope

  • Exhibits technical proficiency of scientific techniques (ie. Multicolor flow, immunohistochemistry, RT-qPCR); complete knowledge and full understanding of area of specialization

Education:

PhD; Educational degrees must be relevant to position (e.g., Biological and biomedical sciences)

Experience:

0-2 years of relevant experience

Equivalency:

BA/BS with 8+ years of experience, Master's degree with 5+ years of experience

The estimated pay scale for the Associate Scientist role based in San Carlos, California is $110,000.00-$115,000.00 per year. Additionally, the position is eligible to participate in the company bonus pool. We offer a wide variety of benefits including, but not limited to: Medical, Dental, Vision, PTO, up to 5% 401(K) match and tuition reimbursement. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on education, experience, skillset, knowledge, where the role is performed, internal equity and market data.
