Department Summary:

The Cyber Effects and Information Warfare (IW) Department (N142) is seeking a Lead Applied Cybersecurity Engineer to support our 16 AF Advanced Information Warfare Operations project.

The Lead Applied Cybersecurity Engineer will work within the 16 AF/A8 whose primary functions and responsibilities are Programming, Acquisition, Contracts, Services, Requirements, and Capabilities across all the Information Warfare mission elements of Cyber, Electronic Warfare, Information Operations, Weather, and Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance. The Applied Cybersecurity Engineer will provide technical expertise in support the 16 AF A8’s cyber and cyber-related mission areas.

The Lead Applied Cybersecurity Engineer will work at a strategic level with 16 AF, AFLCMC, and Cyber Command MITRE PLs to define impactful mission outcomes, influence stakeholder decisions, provide actionable recommendations, and deliver data driven technical products and prototypes. The Applied Cybersecurity Engineer will guide the Sponsor to ensure their acquisition and technical equities are addressed by Cyber Command, while thinking ahead of the current challenge; leveraging the unique vantage point of MITRE to look across our programs and Services and lead the Sponsor to identify the big problems, the right work, that need solutions.

The Lead Applied Cybersecurity Engineer makes key contributions to the 16 AF A8 and has touch points across the AF Cyber Acquisition Programs, works closely with Cyber Command to acquire cyber capabilities for the Cyber Operating Force. The Lead Applied Cybersecurity Engineer will assist the PL in developing project outcomes synchronized across 16 AF cyber projects, AF Cyber Programs and USCYBERCOM projects.

Job Description:

  • Support development of Information Warfare and Cyber Weapon Systems via design review, planning conferences, technical exchange meetings, and capability working groups

  • Provide technical and acquisition expertise to 16 AF activities and associated weapon systems. This includes all DOTMLPF-P requirements such as fielding and beddown activities, capabilities-based planning, modernization, , follow-on operational test and evaluation, and unique logistics requirements.

  • Develop, coordinate, and recommend science and technology maturation and development planning efforts that are needed to modernize 16 AF mission associated weapon systems.

  • Advise on and develop implementation strategies and procedures tailored to 16 AF weapon systems.

  • Advise on prioritization of validated requirements, resources, and schedules.

  • Identify and recommend solutions to resolve anomalies, maintain specific interoperability, commonality, and configuration control, as applicable.

  • Advise and develop inputs to strategy, future force design, capability development guidance, and operational capability requirements.

  • Support the development of programmatic, technical, and contractual requirements.

  • For new weapon systems/activities develop, as necessary, program plans, , organizational and force presentation constructs, readiness reporting products, and.

  • Assume a key role in designing, integrating, and implementing mission direction and objectives in an agile manner to meet the speed of the evolving threat.

  • Identify key areas of innovation and investment where MITRE can actively engage sponsors and provide technical recommendations through rapid and agile development processes.

  • Engage in collaborative research efforts with external FFRDCs, UARCs, industry & academia partners.

  • Provide strong thought/technical leadership to shape the work program to ensure MITRE is addressing the sponsor’s most challenging technical issues.

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to 16 AF A8 director and Senior 16 AF Staff.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Top Secret Clearance with the ability to obtain additional program accesses.

  • Demonstrated strong understanding of Air Force acquisition programs and Cyber Operations, including Joint Cyber Warfighting missions.

  • Demonstrated strong understanding of Cyber Command Policies and Processes and Combatant Commander Priorities.

  • Flexible systems thinker with the ability to deliver results quickly.

  • Demonstrated record of technical team leadership.

  • Understanding of technical fields that are critical to the program’s success (eg, cloud computing, data engineering / data science, digital engineering, cyber security and resiliency techniques, agile software development and acquisition).

  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate across projects.

  • Strong interpersonal skills as well as effective verbal and written communication skills, collaboration, strategic thinking, and interpersonal skills.

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, cyber security, or related field or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.

  • This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Top Secret SCI Clearance.

  • Knowledge of Joint Cyber Warfighting Architecture projects and divisions, and broad knowledge of Joint cyber operations.

  • Familiarity with Information Operations, Offensive Cyber Operations, and Cyber C2.

  • Familiarity with operations and architectures across Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, civil, and commercial agencies.

  • Prior experience working DoD acquisition programs.

  • Experience with the MITRE cyber platform, internal research projects, and MITRE Labs.

  • MS +10 years of experience in computer science, cyber security or related field.
