The Cytotechnologist is responsible for reading and evaluating cytology slides; marking abnormal cytology specimens for pathologist review; maintaining appropriate procedures, records, and quality assurance program(s) in accordance with standards set by Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO); researching and developing new processes; teaching and assisting cytopreparatory staff; utilizing basic management and leadership skills; understanding and applying Continuing Quality Improvement (CQI) principle. Assists in bone marrow collections and processing and other duties as requested.

In this role, the Cytotechnologist:

  • Prepares, reads and evaluates cytology slides, detecting, differentiating and diagnosing presence or absence of disease in nongynecologic samples.

  • Selects and clearly marks the cells most representative of the nature of any pathological process present.

  • Reports laboratory results using uniform diagnostic terminology.

  • Verifies quality control procedures, applies CQI principles.

  • Develops and maintains appropriate procedures and records in accordance with the standards set by CLIA, CAP, and JCAHO.

  • Plans programs for orientation, teaching, competency, and training new and current employees.

Requirements:

  • Baccalaureate degree in biological or related science.

  • Minimum License and Certificates Required: Must be CT(ASCP) or SCT(ASCP) Certified. License not required in Texas
