This position is part of the Logistics Accounting team within the Controller’s organization located in San Antonio, TX. The team is primarily responsible for managing accounting for logistics assets owned by MPLX. Specifically, the team ensures volumetric and monetary information is uploaded and processed correctly within the company’s accounting systems to ensure that internal and external financial statements are accurate and complete. This position will perform a variety of moderately to highly complex regulatory accounting activities in accordance with policies, principles, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Key tasks include preparing financial statements and supporting schedules, analyzing and verifying financial data to ensure integrity of accounting records, and preparation of regulatory reports. Other tasks may include verifying that invoices billed to customers are accurate and complete, recording of revenue and operating expense accruals and adjustments, and performing analytical reviews on results of operation for assigned assets. This position will be responsible for FERC reporting for several complex logistics assets in a timely and accurate manner that meets statutory deadlines. In addition, this position may be responsible for accounting for logistics assets in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with company policies using the various accounting and operational systems, testing SOX controls, supporting financial reporting and assisting other accountants and accounting supervisors on the logistics team as needed.


  • Prepares financial statements, including a Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Cash Flow Statement, Statement of Retained Earnings and supporting schedules

  • Collects, compiles, analyzes, and verifies financial data to ensure the integrity of accounting records, and investigates and resolves discrepancies

  • Prepares quarterly and annual regulatory reports by statutory deadlines

  • Prepares journal entries and maintains general ledger for regulatory reporting, and reconciles general ledger accounts as needed

  • May provide regulatory requirements accounting advice to Management and peers to assist them in managing their financial responsibilities

  • Performs monthly accounting responsibilities as assigned and may include:

  • Obtaining information from internal and external sources to accurately and timely record accounting transactions in the accounting systems in accordance with company policies, controls and US GAAP

  • Reviewing contracts (including more complex contracts) to ensure appropriate billings and accounting entries are posted into SAP for assigned assets

  • Performing analytical reviews of operational results of assets assigned and following up on discrepancies as needed to ensure transactions are appropriately recorded

  • Preparing monthly estimate & accrual journal entries as needed for the specific assets

  • Analyzing account balances at month end and preparing appropriately supported account reconciliations and SOX documentation

  • Responds to internal and external inquiries, including inquiries from customers and external and internal auditors

  • Assists with financial and month-end reporting, SOX control testing, audits, etc.

  • Supports projects as needed

  • Assists other accountants as requested by management

  • Maintains desk procedures to document regulatory reporting process

  • Mentor less experienced accountants and encourage questions from less experienced accountants/explain the “why”


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance

  • Minimum 2 years accounting/finance experience, regulatory accounting experience a plus

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

  • Familiarity with financial accounting statements

  • Experience with general ledger functions and month-end close processes

  • Oil and gas experience preferred


  • Ability to work in a challenging and fast-paced environment

  • Ability to connect the accounting with operations and regulatory reporting of several logistical assets

  • Ability to perform several tasks under a short time window with minimal supervision

  • Ability to identify errors in processes based on basic accounting principles

  • Ability to handle daily activities as well as special project at the same time, multi-tasking will be essential in this job.

  • Proven analytical skills to review and analyze complex accounting information, and ability to identify, research and resolve complex accounting issues

  • Proven ability to solve problems and apply prior experience to new fact patterns and accounting transactions

  • Ability to understand and apply accounting to complex contracts

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (Vlookups, data cleansing, pivot tables & complex formulas)

  • Experience with SAP is preferred. Must have the aptitude to effectively learn company-specific accounting systems

  • Excellent organization skills

  • Ability to effectively interact with Management

  • Flexible to work overtime and some weekends during peak periods
