ICU Medical Principal Engineer, Automation and Controls in Salt Lake City, Utah

Job Title: Principal Engineer, Automation/Control * *Position Summary * *The Principal Engineer, Automation/Controlhas a leadership role in pilot line developments, machine upgrades, new machine builds, internal as well as external. They lead key projects for production improvement and maintain timeline and budget control. It is expected that the Principal Engineer completes complex engineering projects with peer input and guidance from engineering management. They will work on advanced, complex technical projects or business issues requiring state of the art technical or industry knowledge. Work will be accomplished autonomously where goals are generally communicated in solution or project goal terms. The Principal Engineer will consistently make decisions regarding the overall goals and objectives of significant programs or segments of the organization. They will work directly with management to turn strategy into action. Essential Duties & Responsibilities •Lead development of control systems for automated systems with capacities ranging from tens of thousands to over one hundred million parts per year. •Determine machine requirements, evaluate needs, and translate them into feasible and economical equipment solutions. •Provide knowledge on capabilities of key automation supplier hardware and software products. Drive alignment on best practices and preferred suppliers. •Support business unit needs with respect to data collection, scrap and MUV reduction, OEE and yield improvements. •Analyze, evaluate, and plan methods for the solution of complex problems. Conduct investigations of considerable complexity pertaining to the development of new designs, methods, materials, or processes, and investigate possible applications of the results. Contribute to strategy. Define parameters and boundaries for lower-level design activities. Establishes metrics for key aspects of system performance. •Develop project direction together with management. Accept the highest level of accountability. •Responsible for training/mentoring less-experienced engineers in area of expertise. May be responsible for direct supervision of others. •Resolve complex problems within teams, departments, projects, programs and cross-functionally. Manage activities of reports to achieve goals consistent with team objectives. •Deliver communications tailored to the needs of the receiver (managers, peers, customers) with appropriate frequency to maximize its utility and promote cross-functional collaboration. Bring substantive conflicts and disagreements into the open and attempts to resolve them collaboratively; build consensus. •Work on special projects as they arise. Knowledge & Skills •Experience with the high volume fully automated production machines. •Extensive experience with PLC (Allen Bradley) control and HMI •Experience with vision systems (Cognex and/or Keyence) •Experience with servo motions and programming •Hands on experience with the following but not limited to: Pneumatic actuators, servos, stepper motors, EFD dispensing valves, sensors, sonic welding, pick-and-place mechanisms, pad printing, electrical test instruments, air-leak testers. •Experience with the electrical hardware, schematics, and wiring per NEMA STD is preferred •Networking and automatic data acquisition is preferred •General understanding of 3D solid models, drawings, and CAD tools such as Solidworks is preferred •Experience with process validation support IQ/OQ/PQ. Factory acceptance and site acceptance testing is preferred •Company leader in your domain of expertise. Quickly and easily obtain effective expertise within scope of influence. •Has deep knowledge of best practices. Has subject matter expertise on engineering discipline Minimum Qualifications, Education & Experience * •Must be at least 18 years of age •Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (Engineering or Technology) •10 years’ experience *Work Environment •This is largely a sedentary role. •This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment. •Work may be performed in a clean room environment •While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit or stand for long periods of time; depending on the machine they are operating •Must be able to occasionally move and lift objects of up to 25 lbs •Typically requires travel less than 10% of the time.
