State of Utah - Jobs Deputy Construction Engineer in SALT LAKE CITY, Utah

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a Deputy Construction Engineer (Engineering Manager I) who will manage and coordinate engineering assignments and activities related to the construction area. As the Deputy Construction Engineer,you will work closely with FHWA and UDOT agencies to develop and implement specifications and policy. You will also play a significant role in the development and teaching of our training programs with the Central Construction Division. This position is a main contact for the Regions as it relates to our construction specifications and processes. Principal Duties Specification updates,partnering and project delivery coordination are just a few duties of this position. You will also be involved in:

  • Reviewing projects and evaluating progress and goals of the assigned project.
  • Acting as the technical authority on specific aspects of the assignments.
  • Overseeing the development,evaluation or review of plans and criteria for a variety of engineering activities; assesses feasibility of proposed engineering plans,projects and equipment.
  • Coordinating assigned activities with other units and staff in the agency.
  • Serving as a liaison with other agencies and government entities as needed.
  • Participating in the selection of consulting engineers.
  • Overseeing and reviewing the work of consulting engineers.
  • Working with the state construction engineer team to monitor and asses the construction program in order to determine areas of concern and address those issues.
  • Keeping a current knowledge of UDOT standard specifications and drawings and assisting with interpretation and updates as needed. 
  • Acting as a liaison with construction oversight crews in the regions and providing necessary support and training. 

The Ideal Candidate The best candidate for this position must:

  • Be registered as a professional engineer (PE) in Utah.
  • Have at least two years of engineering experience following licensure as a PE.
  • Have strong leadership,facilitation and organization skills.
  • Have excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Have excellent skills in identifying and solving complex problems.

This position may be filled as an Engineer III for those without two years of post PE experience.  In order to fill the position as an Engineer III,you must be registered as a PE in Utah,plus have one year of engineering experience after licensure as a PE. The Engineer III salary range is $36.55 - $59.29. Preferences Preference may be given to applicants who have UDOT construction experience. Supplemental Information Here is some information of which you should be aware:

  • Working Conditions - Risks found in the typical office setting,which is adequately lighted,heated and ventilated,e.g.,safe use of office equipment,avoiding trips and falls,observing fire regulations,etc.  There will be times when the employee works on roadway construction projects,which requires the use of special safety precautions.
  • Physical Requirements - Typically,the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however,there will be walking on uneven surfaces and navigating roadway construction projects.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Group Leader/Region Director.
