Ultradent Products Inc Controls Engineer in Salt Lake City, Utah

Controls Engineer – Data Integration

Ultradent is looking for a Controls Engineer with experience in programming and an interest in data integration. We are looking for a candidate with ideally 2+ years of experience. We are willing to consider exceptional applicants with less experience. Strong candidates generally have a four-year degree in an engineering or computer science field.

Our engineering group develops custom automated manufacturing equipment to support our company’s manufacturing needs. This position focuses on how this equipment interfaces with the company’s IT subsystems, including capturing, transmitting, and analyzing data, either within databases or through communication with MES or ERP systems. A typical day’s work may include troubleshooting the existing interfaces between equipment and subsystems; proposing, collaborating on, and implementing improvements to existing interfaces; and properly deploying interfaces on new and existing equipment throughout the company. You will work closely with IT (Information Technology), OT (Operations Technology), and manufacturing personnel to complete your objectives.

We place heavy emphasis on continuous learning and improvement, both on an individual level and as an engineering group. Besides learning and improving how we should interface with these subsystems, you will be highly encouraged to share this knowledge with your colleagues through documentation, collaboration, and training.

ATTRIBUTES YOU’LL NEED TO SUCEED:

  • Intelligent – Can you learn quickly and find solutions to challenging problems?

  • Innovative – Do you have ideas to improve the designs, products, and processes around you?

  • Curious – Do you take things apart to see how they work? Do you study subjects on your own just because you want to understand them?

  • Collaborative – Can you share ideas freely, listen to others’ ideas closely, and blend it all together to find the best solution?

  • Hard working – Do you enjoy working hard and pushing through difficult challenges?

  • Growth oriented – Are you driven to learn and to be better today than you were yesterday?

  • Brave –When needed, are you willing to make a stand on arriving at the best solution, even in the face of adversity? Are you willing to ask for help, even when you are afraid asking will expose your lack of knowledge?

  • Resilient – Can you enjoy the process of making and refining new things even when your ideas are not working?

  • Empirical – Are you willing to try new things and run tests to learn by experience? Can you gather data to help you arrive at, and defend, the best working solution?

ADDITIONAL SKILLS THAT WILL HELP YOU BE SUCCESSFUL :

  • Systems thinking – Can you analyze a complex system, both as a whole and in its parts? Are you able to design, collaborate, and make improvements from both perspectives?

  • Programming – Can you model a process in a programming language, using developed standards and good programming practices? Can you model an HMI display that is both functional and adds value to an end user?

  • Experience with Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), Test-Driven Software Development (TDD), and source control is very desirable.

  • Familiarity with Beckhoff’s TwinCAT programming environment is desirable.

  • Experience with performing software design reviews is beneficial.

  • Debug – Can you use your knowledge and experience to track down bugs in code and hardware designs, using a process of review, simulation, and elimination?

  • Project management – Can you manage your time and resources to stay on target for hitting your promised delivery dates? Can you hold your peers to the same high standard? Can you openly and honestly communicate your project status with your customers and leadership?

  • Prototyping – Do you have innovative ideas about how to solve a problem? Can you quickly convert those ideas into working simulations, which can then be used to answer the unknowns in your application?

  • In most cases, you will be able to simulate proposed software changes before hardware is available.

  • By working with others, you will have access to their engineering and programming expertise, which will help in your efforts to simulate a solution, even when it falls outside your own skills.

  • Experience documenting your prototypes, unknowns, and lessons learned is beneficial.

  • Statistics – Can you gather empirical data from your prototypes and processes, to support your design decisions and to help your customers make important manufacturing decisions?

  • Experience with OEE, throughput, and other manufacturing statistics is beneficial.
