Summary Student Nurse Technicians (SNT) function as a member of the nursing team, assisting licensed nurse in the care of patients receiving preventive, acute, sub-acute chronic, maintenance & hospice care. SNT is given opportunities to provide basic nursing care & procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the class, validated by VA staff in order to provide care to patients with acute to chronic conditions in a health care setting. SNTs functions under direct supervision of a licensed RN Responsibilities Duties This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles. The SNT commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community. (ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses). The focus is on individual growth and development in practice with increased levels of self-direction. The novice brings principles and theory with limited application of critical thinking skills. Performs other duties as assigned by RN preceptor. Work Schedule: Minimum of 16 hours per month, maximum 40 hours per week. You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below: Grade Determination: Education: GS-2 Completed High school or equivalent. GS-3 Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study GS-4 Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associate degree Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.
