VCA Animal Hospitals Emergency Veterinary Technician in Salem, Oregon

VCA Salem Animal Hospital is seeking a Certified Veterinary Technician to join our Emergency Day Team!

At VCA Salem Animal Hospital , we value and prioritize the partnership between our Certified Veterinary Technicians and our Veterinarians! We are a hybrid Wellness/Outpatient/Surgical/Emergency hospital open 365 days a year from 8am-8pm with 12 doctors on staff.

Position Overview:

Our Certified Veterinary Technicians are vital to our operations, both in supporting our surgery and dentistry teams, and providing the highest level of service to our ER and General Practice teams when needed. An experienced technician will find an immediate home here with our team, and a new graduate technician will find an environment well suited to skill development and mentoring.

In this role, you will play a crucial part in providing high-quality emergency care to animals in need. Our Emergency team is crucial in ensuring that the most critical cases receive immediate attention and that all patients receive the care they need.

Every day, you will have the opportunity to practice, enhance and improve your skills, including:

  • Triage: Perform an initial assessment to evaluate the patient's condition quickly. This includes checking vital signs, assessing for obvious injuries or distress, and gathering information from the pet owner about the situation.

  • Assist Doctors: Collaborate closely with veterinarians to assist in exams, treatments, and medical procedures for emergency cases.

  • Venipuncture and IVC Placement: Proficiently perform venipuncture and intravenous catheter placement.

  • Medication Administration: Safely and accurately administer fluids, medications, and other treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.

  • Team Collaboration: Work in conjunction with all technical staff across the hospital to ensure hospitalized patients receive optimal care. Maintain open communication with the healthcare team.

  • Hospitalized Patients: Vigilantly monitor hospitalized patients, recognizing subtle changes in their clinical status and promptly reporting any concerns to the veterinary team. Assist in Departmental Rounds.

  • Client Education: Provide clear and concise discharge instructions to clients, ensuring they understand the care their furry family member requires after leaving the hospital.

  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records, including patient history, treatment details, and client communication. Assist with the completion of cost estimates.

  • Anesthesia and Sedation Monitoring: Prepare patients for procedures and monitor anesthesia to ensure patient safety.

  • Diagnostic Imaging: Operate diagnostic imaging equipment and assist in capturing radiographs and other diagnostic images.

  • Laboratory Procedures: Run diagnostics, correlate results with the clinical presentation of the patient and notify the Veterinarian of results.

  • Blood Transfusion Therapy: Including collection, administration, and transfusion reactions. Administering Oxygen: Flow-by Oxygen, Nasal Oxygen Cannula, or Oxygen Cage.

Schedule: Day Shift, We are happy to accommodate a 3/12 or 4/10 schedule.

Compensation: Starting at $25 - 30 / hour. Starting range is determined by license, skill set, and years of experience in the field. Financial growth opportunities available.

Required qualifications include Certified (or eligible) Veterinary Technician in Oregon.
