Description

Responsible for the development and implementation of library services, programs, activities, and assistance to patrons in assigned area. Duties also include technical processing and community engagement. Provides leadership and direction to other library employees and volunteers.

Examples of Duties

  • Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.

  • Participates in all phases of responsibilities to assure quality service to patrons in person and remotely, including but not limited to providing assistance to patrons; locating library materials; answering reference questions; assisting patrons with using library facilities, equipment, and technologies; instructing patrons on the use of print and electronic/digital resources; assisting patrons with readers' advisory; and helping to resolve patrons' concerns and complaints.

  • Plans, develops, implements, and administers library programming to address community and patron needs in assigned area; determines program format, budget, and resource requirements; implements marketing and outreach efforts; recruits and trains necessary volunteers; coordinates projects and event logistics; maintains cost-effective programming; secures and handles payment of event performers; orders promotional products and program supplies.

  • Presents classes for adults and all-ages groups.

  • Maintains library collections in assigned area; reviews library donations for potential additions; weeds damaged and low circulating materials; makes purchase requests for new titles.

  • Represents and promotes the Library, its services, and programs by working closely with library clientele, educational institutions, community, public, private, and voluntary organizations and agencies.

  • Participates in supporting library initiatives through effective displays, contributing to the Library's online presence, and supporting marketing efforts by designing promotional materials in a variety of print and online formats.

  • Assists with the development of the annual Library operating budget, monitors the allocated budget funds for adult services, and administers services within budget restrictions.

  • Performs record-keeping duties as required, including logging library usage and program statistics, in assigned area, and generates reports of library statistics.

  • Assists with the management and administration of the automated notification system and the Integrated Library System.

  • Interprets and ensures compliance with both Town and Library policies and procedures.

  • Assists in the creation and implementation of Library policies and procedures.

  • Initiates and suggests ideas for the successful completion of work.

  • Tactfully and pleasantly informs the public of Library policies.

  • Plans and conducts tours of the Library and special programs as requested.

  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

  • Oversees library ope ations in the absence of the Town Librarian when requested.

  • Troubleshoots malfunctions with library equipment and technology.

  • Assists the public with registration for library programs and classes.

  • Learns new digital formats to be able to teach patrons how to download electronic materials.

  • Assists and backs up other areas as assigned.

  • Keeps up-to-date on library trends and technology in adult services and general librarianship.

  • Attends workshops, conferences, and training, some requiring travel, to update and improve knowledge and skills.

Typical Qualifications

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to maintain confidentiality as required by state law. Ability to prepare budgets, provide reports, and deal courteously with the staff and the public. Effective oral and written communication skills, knowledge of the philosophy and techniques of library service, including library trends and innovations. Ability to determine priorities and to coordinate activities to accomplish objectives. Basic understanding of cataloging principles. Ability to organize own work without close supervision. Proficiency in the use of computers and related equipment, hardware, and software. Typing skills equal to 30WPM. Thorough knowledge of the English language. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to function effectively as a team member. Ability to take direction willingly and give direction clearly. Ability to cooperate and communicate with people. Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with people. Must pass pre-employment drug screening, criminal background, and reference checks. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Certification

Master's degree in Library or Information Science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association: M.L.S, M.L.I.S or similar master's degree.

  1. One (1) year of experience as a professional librarian performing public library work.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in designing library programming and event series for adults.

  1. Knowledge of current trends in library services for adults.
  2. Knowledge of current theories, research, and best practices relating to adult learning and literacy.
  3. Experience in library outreach activities.
