Lab Specimen Transporter

Dept: Laboratory Services

Schedule: PRN 6am-2:30pm.

Transports specimens, equipment and other items as specified within Saint Louis University Hospital and its associated facilities. All functions are performed promptly, effectively and efficiently, observing infection control and patient safety guidelines at all times.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

  1. Completes Transportation requests promptly, correctly and efficiently. (1, 2, 3, 5, 8)

Criteria

• Transports patients as assigned by computer-based system or by supervisor, lead person or director without delay.

• Utilizes proper Ticket To Ride form when moving patients between inpatient nursing units and ancillary departments.

• Demonstrates competency in administering patients’ oxygen and O2 equipment needs during transport.

• Immediately informs supervisor or lead person of delays in response times.

• Responds to pages from director, supervisor or lead person immediately.

• Demonstrate ability to relate to coworkers in a professional and respectful manner, in order to assure and promote a culture of safety. Maintains professional behavior and observes hospital and departmental dress code at all times.

• Assumes responsibility and ownership in solving problems and resolving complaints when possible; refers to supervisor or director if necessary.

• Demonstrates respect and compassion for internal and external customers while delivering prompt; courteous service.

• Extends apologies as appropriate when service fails, and then takes immediate corrective action.

• Introduces self, identifies patient by checking armband.

• Returns equipment to department when found throughout hospital facility.

• Has an understanding of age specific conditions when working with patients/customers.

  1. Communicates effectively with follow-up when necessary. (1, 3, 5, 6)

Criteria

• Communicates effectively and respectfully when working with patients/customers, supervisors and other staff.

• Contacts supervisor on any unclear or potentially problematic issue.

• Attends staff meetings and is responsible for knowledge of content.

• Maintains proprietary information, discusses confidential information in private, avoids gossip.

• Refrains from using cell phones or computers for personal use while on duty.

  1. Competence and Collaboration: Demonstrates attitude of cooperation and professionalism when working. (1, 2, 3, 5, 6)

Criteria

• Adheres to dress code.

• Observes SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital Standards of Conduct.

• Demonstrates organizational ability, accepts assignments and attends in-services and staff meetings.

• Adheres to operational guidelines in supervisor’s or lead person’s absence.

  1. Basic Life Support

• All transporters must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS-CPR).

  1. Safety/Infection Control: Practices according to safety and infection control policies. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

Criteria

• Utilizes proper body mechanics.

• Follows patient safety guidelines including but not limited to checking patient ID wristbands with patient charts prior to conducting any transports.

• Practices standard precautions and disposes of hazardous waste per established guidelines.

• Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees in accordance with hospital standards.

• Maintains clutter free environment.

• Keeps conversations and background noise to a minimum.

• Adheres to dress code.

• Reports risk management concerns.

• Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  1. Service: Provides service excellence to the customers of Saint Louis University Hospital by delivering timely, high quality care in a courteous and respectful manner. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

Criteria

• Adheres to procedures, infection control measures (blood borne pathogen standard) and patient safety guidelines in the deliverance of quality service.

• Keeps noise to a minimum.

• Assumes personal responsibility for cleanliness and safety.

• Picks up trash, notify housekeeping and maintenance of deficiencies.

• Ensures equipment is kept clean and in good working order.

• Retrieves and returns any abandoned equipment from corridors, garage, etc.

• Ensures malfunction equipment is tagged and immediately removed from service.

• Communicates in pleasant and effective manner with patients, families and staff at all times.

  1. Quality Improvement (QI): Incorporates Quality Assessment into one’s daily work. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

Criteria

• Keep supervisor informed of any operational problems.

• Contributes to hospital, department, performance improvement goals.

Job Specifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION:

• Preferred Education: Must possess high school diploma or equivalent.

• Preferred minimum experience: Previous customer service and/or patient experience.

• Work experience in a position that or ability to work in involved high interaction with the public and efficient communication skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Lifts, positions, push and/or transfer patients and equipment.

• Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, lifting, pushing, pulling 100+ pounds.

• Must be able to remain calm and work concisely in highly demanding circumstances.

• Must have normal vision (with/without the use of corrective lenses).

• Must hear and speak suitably for normal conversation.

• May require the wearing of protective equipment, i.e., gloves, mask, gown, goggles, etc.
