Child Life Specialist - Emergency Department Days/Inpatient Weekends

Monday, Thursday and every other Friday in the Emergency Room 7:30am-4pm

Every Weekend Inpatient Coverage 8am-4:30pm

This position does not work holidays.

Job Summary:

Collaborates with the health care team to provide social, emotional, and developmental support during a pediatric patient's illness and hospitalization.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides educational preparation to patients and families prior to potential anxiety provoking tests, procedures, or events through the use of explanation, hands on materials, and medical play.

  • Supplies a caring and secure atmosphere for patients and their families in pediatrics.

  • Collaborates with the health care team to plan appropriate interventions.

  • Develops and/or participates in outreach and educational activities to teach families, staff, and the community about issues and services related to ill and hospitalized children.

  • Acts as a resource for families and the health care team regarding child development including behavior modification and compliance issues.

  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree in Child Life Human Development or related field

EXPERIENCE

  • No experience required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent reaching, sitting, standing and walking.

  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more).

  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.

  • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.

  • Occasional bending, stooping, climbing, twisting and gripping.

  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.

  • Occasional use of vision to identify and distinguish colors.

  • Occasional driving.

  • Rare repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements and squatting.

REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
