CMU MEDICAL EDUCATION PARTNERS Phlebotomist in SAGINAW, Michigan

Overview:

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician, the Phlebotomist performs routine clinical and clerical functions in the collection and documentation of patient specimens.

Responsibilities:

  • Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the provider who ordered it. Refers unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification before collecting samples or processing specimens.
  • Verifies patient identification and explains sampling procedures to patients.
  • Serves patients by identifying the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens. Draws blood in accordance with provider order and labels specimen according to standards.   
  • Processes and prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
  • Inspects all specimens prior to transport, for proper labeling requirements and specimen type.
  • Transports specimens in a timely manner via the most appropriate method to ensure turn-around-time is met.
  • Maintains proper safety protocol to include universal precautions and use of Personal Protective Equipment ("PPE")
  • Verifies and documents within Epic all appropriate patient details and specimen collection in accordance with best practice and CMU Health policy.
  • Complies with all CMU Health partnering laboratory policies, procedures and safety practices.
  • Prepares, cleans and maintains exam and treatment rooms and laboratory according to proper infection control standards.
  • Assists with clinic flow to ensure efficiency. Seeks out other tasks to assist with patient flow, including escorting patients to room if the clinic is running behind, checking in on patients, etc.
  • Performs point-of-care laboratory and diagnostic procedures according to protocol.
  • Performs quality controls according to established procedures.
  • Performs instrument processing to include cleaning and sterilization of instruments according to protocol, as assigned.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards.

     

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

  • Clinic Environment, requiring delivery of patient care (physical dexterity), application of bio-hazard material handling, minimal lifting (not greater than 10 pounds), extensive computer usage (eye strain).

Qualifications:

  • Education:  High School Diploma or GED and Graduation from a Medical Assistant Program which reflects the training outlined for basic competence by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) preferred or relevant experience.
  • Licensure:  ASCP Phlebotomy certification or within 6 months of hire
  • Experience:  At least one year Ambulatory/Office experience. 
  • Aptitude:  Understanding and appreciation of the medical education/academic process with an intrinsic desire to enhance said process through direct educational involvement and support.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills that encourage harmonious working relationships with individuals in the health and educational settings.
  • Epic experience preferred.
