Job Description Summary

At GE Power Conversion we provide electrification solutions, enabling customers to power their energy-intensive operations, and to improve energy efficiency. We are recognized for high-performance ship electric power and electric propulsion systems, energy management and automation and control systems as applied globally across the marine, energy, infrastructure, and industrial sectors.

The Power Electronics Engineer will be involved in the development of low voltage and medium voltage power electronics designs for Drive System projects. This is a technical role and will involve working in a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to specify, design, support manufacturing & validation of MW-scale power electronics for Marine, Offshore and Naval, Renewable Energy and Industry applications.

The Power Electronics Engineer will report directly to the Power Electronics Engineering Manager.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Specify, design and document power electronics converters technical solutions to meet specific application requirements.

  • Undertake all aspects of power electronics circuits design, snubber design, gating electronics design, thermal design, etc. This requires semiconductor device domain knowledge (Diodes, Thyristors, IGBTs, GTOs, IGCT, MOSFETS, SiC, GaN, etc).

  • Development of power electronic systems analytical, modelling tools for systems with a large degree of MW range power electronic converter systems. These will include power electronic inverter thermal studies, EMC, harmonic studies, common mode studies, rating evaluation, performance evaluation and optimisation etc.

  • Verification, validation testing of low voltage & medium voltage power electronic systems,Evaluation, performance evaluation and optimisation etc.

  • Application of engineering standards and development of design practices.

  • Ensuring power electronic system designs comply with the relevant health & safety, international standards, and class society rules.

  • Support attainment of on-time delivery, cost and quality targets on projects.

  • Assistance to tendering, test and commissioning teams.

  • Liaison with customers, suppliers, and sub-contractors.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, Masters or PhD degree in power electronics is desirable.

  • Knowledge of power electronics converter design and electrical machines control methods is desirable.

  • Good semiconductor device domain knowledge and their associated gating electronics & snubber circuits design and thermal design.

  • Experience of power electronics design tools such as Mathcad, MATLAB, Simulink, PLECS etc.

  • Willing to travel within UK and overseas for short term working.

  • Able to achieve UK security clearance.
