Whittier Street Health Center Medical Interpreter (Spanish) in Roxbury, Massachusetts

The Medical Interpreter reports directly to the Director of Operations and supports all clinical staff. The Medical Interpreter is responsible for providing accurate interpretation for patients, family, and staff during visits to the Center. The Medical Interpreter will schedule appointments as needed and maintain confidentiality of patient?s personal and medical information at all times. The Medical Interpreter will provide a high level of exceptional customer service skill, and focus on achieving quality standards. TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate forms and reports. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: ? Provide accurate interpretation for patients, family, and staff during visits to the Center. ? Assist in registration, financial application process, and explanation of other center procedures. Schedules appointments as needed. ? Maintain confidentiality of patient?s personal and medical information. ? Report to supervisor any problems, suggestions and concerns. ? Ability to maintain rapport with patients and medical staff. ? Act as a cultural broker and communicate patient?s social and cultural needs as they relate to the medical history. Comprehensive knowledge of referral network. ? Uses appropriate methods to communicate with providers regarding patient?s concerns, schedule, and cancellation. ? Performs conference calls with simultaneous translations. ? Follows appropriate lines of communication to effectively resolve difficult patient/family/provider/staff situations. ? Responds promptly and courteously to customer (Internal & external)/patient requests, ensuring rapport and trust. ? Communicates effectively with internal and external customers with respect of differences in cultures, values, beliefs and ages, reflecting Center?s commitment to cultural sensitivity. ? Respects patient/customer privacy and confidentiality. ? Accepts responsibility and accountability for own actions with appropriate follow through. Fulfills commitments. ? Demonstrates service excellence skills to support high level patient satisfaction as defined by the Center?s mission. ? Responds appropriately and immediately in emergency situations. ? Maintains a safe and healthy environment for patients, visitors, and/or staff to provide the highest level of physical comfort and minimize risk and injury. ? Ensures compliance with regulations to maintain accreditation, licensure and certification. ? Completes all Center and Department Specific Trainings and Mandatory requirements on time. ? Fosters interdisciplinary, collaborative relationships within the department and the organization. ? Makes phone notes documentation in EPIC on an as needed basis. ? Maintains appropriate continuing education on trends in medical interpretation. ? Assumes other duties as required. Required Experience/Abilities/Competencies: ? One-year prior experience in a health care environment ? Working knowledge of the registration function of integrated practice management systems in a healthcare environment ? Advanced customer service skills ? Advanced phone and communication skills ? Full understanding of insurance eligibility ? Experience utilizing Microsoft Office and other computer software ? Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding patient?s medical information ? Ability to sort and file materials correctly by alphabetic or numeric systems ? Ability to read, understand understand and follow oral and written instruction ? Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with staff Licensure/Education/Training: ? Medical interpreting certification ? High School Diploma or higher (some college desired)
