These employees specialize in working with insurance companies and patients to ensure coverage of services. Billing Clerks work primarily in the EMR with a focus on patient ledgers to apply payments received, monitor pending payments and calculate balances. Additionally, these employees provide financial counseling for patients, assists patients with payment agreements, monitor for trends, process electronic/paper payments, submit corrected claims and appeals, and provide assistance to providers and staff with applying appropriate codes for services rendered. Billing Clerks also analyze and process aging reports, contacting insurance carriers for payments and/or submitting appropriate documentation to accelerate payment, and contact patients to set-up payment arrangements.

Applicants for Billing Clerk positions must have a High-School or General Equivalency Diploma or higher and 1-3 years working in a medical office setting as a billing clerk or 2-4 years working as office support with exposure to general billing functions. These applicants must possess customer services skills, research skills, organizational skills, computer knowledge with emphasis on EMR systems, an understanding of general mathematics, knowledge of claims procedures, and a general understanding of medical terminology. Familiarity with payer portals is also beneficial but not a requirement.
