Surgery Registered Nurse

Inside the surgery room, the patient is unable to make decisions of their own. The circulating nurse acts as the patient's advocate while the patient is under the influence of anesthesia. The Nurse Circulator ensures the safety of patients prei-operatively (pre, intra, post-op).

In the operating room, the duties of the circulating nurse are carried out outside the sterile area. The RN Circulator manages all the necessary care inside the surgery room, assisting the team. They are responsible for the patient, charting, and obtaining any additional needed instrumentation during the surgery.

By using sound judgment, interpersonal communication skills, and critical thinking skills, the circulating nurse can check and evaluate the patient's needs, ensuring positive outcomes.

Some of the roles of the circulating nurse include, but are not limited to:

  • Patient Safety -- every patient deserves a trained, skilled, and knowledgeable RN. The RN will interview, transfer, position, and prep the patient according to surgical needs. 

  • Clinical judgment-- observation, knowledge, and assessment skills along with the ability to foresee needs are essential to the success of the operation.

  • Communication skills -- communicates well with the surgeon, anesthetist, scrub tech, and any other parties involved in the surgical process to make sure the room is prepared for the patient.

Job Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

  • Current Utah RN Licensure, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.

  • Current ACLS, PALS, & BLS.

  • Able to take Call - 1 weekday night each week & 1 weekend a month

  • Able to work 4 - 10 hour shifts a week (0600-1600)

  • Ability to stay until patients are recovered or transferred (1900)
