Microsoft Corporation Senior Optical Engineer, Azure Fiber Research - Optical Modelling in Romsey, United Kingdom

Do you have a passion for modelling optical components and/or optical fibers? Do you have an inventive mind, eager to create new concepts and devices that advance cutting-edge frontiers? Would you like to contribute to the production of the next generation of hollow core optical fibers (HCFs), working in a supportive research environment? If these questions resonate with you, then you might be suitable for this role.

We are looking for a motivated senior optical engineer to join Azure Fiber's team of experts who are working on developing the next generation of optical fibers for cloud computing. The ideal candidate will investigate different fiber concepts, design new types of fibers with hollow cores, and develop advanced models to simulate light propagation inside them. The research will aim to develop innovative fiber designs, looking to improve optical performance, mechanical strength and cost efficiency for fibers that will be used in Microsoft Azure global network.

The position will be based in the Southampton (UK) area, between the Microsoft Azure Fiber lab in Romsey and the state-of-the-art cleanroom facility at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton. The principal optical engineer will have access to world-class resources and expertise in optical fiber research and development, and will have the opportunity and mission to shape the future of optical networking and cloud computing at Microsoft Azure.

Responsibilities

  • Designing new hollow core optical fiber concepts based on theoretical and numerical models validated through experimental research

  • Developing models for light guidance and propagation inside these new fibers using simulations, numerical and analytical methods

  • Developing and deploy highly efficient code on high performance computer clusters to optimize fiber designs aiming for suitability for data transmission and high volume manufacturability

  • Leveraging artificial intelligence tools and techniques to enhance the fiber design process and improve the accuracy and efficiency of the models and simulations

  • Collaborating with other researchers and engineers in Microsoft Azure Fiber and external partners, such as the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, to translate the new fiber designs into practically realizable optical fibers

  • Liaise with the fabrication team to validate the new fiber designs and evaluate their performance and reliability

  • Reporting and sharing the outcomes and progress of the research to internal and external audiences, including senior management, customers, and peers

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field AND technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field AND technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field

  • Experience in modelling optical fibers or devices

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: 

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research-focused modelling experience, with a focus on optical fiber design and optimization, preferably with some direct experience on hollow core fiber design

  • Track record for excellence in research

  • Competence in use of parallel computing

  • Proficiency in machine learning and optimization problems

  • Relentless drive for excellence
